Big Brother and the Holding Company's performance at the Monterey Pop Festival was so powerful, the festival organizers hastily provided a second performing slot for the band to ensure it was captured by D.A. Pennebaker's film crew. Janis Joplin's cover of Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain" was a major part of helping them to get signed to Columbia Records later that year. Established artists such as Cass Elliot stared in wonder as Joplin delivered a blues-soaked performance.

If you haven't heard it before, I think you'd enjoy her gospel-infused Work Me Lord

Here’s the “Ball and Chain” I like the best, from an exceptionally good “Contemprary Christian Artist” from the Nashville tradition, total pro, great bands always:

This entire album “Wakened by the Wind” (as opposed to “woke from the wind”) from 1991 is great.

Thanks for your post too, man alive, you got me all over the net listening to and playing things tonight, had work to do!

One of my favorite videos. Cass’ reaction was very telling.

Cass had a very good set of pipes, especially for the sort of singing that she did; but she could never hold a candle to Janis, in terms of the genre Janis worked. They were doing completely different things.

I couldn’t stand her in 1968. Just listed to this “Ball & Chain” and discovered my opinion hasn’t changed one bit in 53 years.
