"Words of Love" was written by John Phillips, and featured Cass Elliot as the primary vocalist. It was released as a single in November 1966 (backed with a cover of Martha and the Vandellas's "Dancing in the Street").
Given the disappointing chart placement of the prior single, Look Through My Window, hopes were high that Words of Love would return the group to the upper reaches of the charts: on the week of January 21, 1967, the single fulfilled this hope, as it reached No. 5 in the United States.

Best Mamas and Papas: I Call Your Name
Their harmonies were just awesome.
Words of love, so soft and tender
Won’t win a girl’s heart anymore
If you love her then you must send her
Somewhere where she’s never been before
Worn out phrases and longin’ gazes
Won’t get you where you want to go, no
Words of love, soft and tender
Won’t win her
You oughta know by now
You oughta know, you oughta know by now
Words of love, soft and tender
Won’t win her anymore
You oughta know by now
You oughta know, you oughta know by now
Words of love, soft and tender
Won’t win a girl’s heart anymore
If you love her then you must send her
Somewhere where she’s never been before
Worn out phrases and longin’ gazes
Won’t get you where you want to go
Words of love, soft and tender
Won’t win her anymore, anymore
Fun fact...
Lou Adler, who signed them & produced their albums, was married to Shelly Fabares during the M&P era which actually lasted less than 3 years.
Missing, the intro:
“And now to sing this lovely ballad, here is Mama Cass” with the sound of someone clearing their throat in there somewhere...
Check out Foxes and Fossils.
I almost forgot...
The studio “band” for the M&P albums was the best of the best LA musicians - “The Wrecking Crew”.
Although Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) gets a lot of credit for his vocal arrangements, John Philips was, at the very least, his equal and IMO even better than BW.
Their harmonies were just awesome.
Song written by Lennon and McCartney.
That got a lot of airplay out here on Boss Radio 93 KHJ as well at “KFWB, Channel 98!” and KRLA (the 50,000-watt rock blaster at 1110 kilocycles, not today’s conservative talk station at 870 kcs). And it brings back memories—the 1967 Rose Bowl, which the Purdue Boilermakers hung on to win after a USC Trojan two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Super Bowl, now designated Super Bowl I, which, because it didn’t sell out, was blacked out on local TV—the Super Blackout as it was dubed.
That was actually the intro to the Mama Cass tune, “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”
“Check out Foxes and Fossils.”
YES!!!

I grew up and loved Mama’s & Papa’s but Foxes and Fossils are better.
Youre probably thinking od dream a little dream of me...that had an intro like that.
Talented for sure. Really good quality production. Somebody knows how to mic(rophone) and mix. The "live" stuff sounds better to us that it did to the audience, you can bet on that!
I caught the act by accident, looking for "Dedicated to the One I Love," and *** HOLY COW ***
That is, indeed, a lovely ballad. However, Wayne's version is among my Top 20 favorite songs of all time. Ozzie's version is also great, as is Teddy's version.
“....and *** HOLY COW ***”
If you’re old enough it might even be an emotional experience — without inhaling :-).
“Dedicated to the One I Love—The Shirelles (1959)”
Oh, yes! It was in the southeast, too!
My favorite Mamas & Papas tune is Got a Feelin'.
Totally different group, but a song that reminds me of Got a Feeling, is Colorado Song by Ozark Mtn Daredevils - especially the barely audible wind chimes in the middle of the instrumental.

Yes, and Cass Elliot is really good.
