An elderly woman asked her priest if her dog would be in Heaven.

Somewhat automatically, he replied that animals do not have souls, and so would not be in Heaven.

She said, “Oh, but I couldn’t be happy without him.”

The priest thought for a while, then said, “One thing we know about Heaven is that you *will* be happy. If you can’t be happy without your dog, then he’ll be there.”

Been there, too. Sad, sad, sad...but it's all part of the plan. All living things just eventually wear-out.

As a pet owner and animal lover, having to say goodbye is one the hardest things we go through.

I've liked that song since I first bought the album around 2002.

But I've always wondered about the big gap between the sad mood that the words are written in, vs the bouncy, almost flippant way the band renders it as a song.

So in the past, I texted grieving pet owners a copy of the lyrics, while purposely not including a link to the music. FWIW, here are the lyrics:

Puppy love, puppy love
Yes, she gave all she had
Not like a brother or sister
More like a mom or a dad

We never asked her, never gave her a choice
We just barked out commands
"Sit, stay, don't beg, stop licking my hands"
Those days are gone now
I wish Goldie could come out and play.

[Chorus]:
Goldie's last day, Goldie's last day
If a picture paints a thousand words
There's nothing left to say
Wish you could have been there for Goldie's last day.

She was eleven to you and me
What's that in dog years?
Seventy-seven, that's more than eleven
She outlived her peers
Talk around town is that Goldie passed away.

[Chorus]

I am so sorry, I will keep you and your fur baby in my prayers. She is your family and this is so difficult for you. My baby is almost 15 and I know his day will come far too soon. My heart breaks for you even though you are doing what is best for her.

I cried over my dog more than my own mom. He was my world. A magnificent beast. It is the one last act of kindness we can do for them but it is the hardest. Sending hugs.

The kindest thing you can do is to let them go. I had to several times. Although it was a hard decision after it was done I had peace because my sweet pet was finally at peace. I am one of those believing my pets will be waiting for me on the other side

Been through it with five dogs over 25 years. Hate it every time. The last few times I was conscious when they arrived as just- weaned pups that that day would come.
But it’s still so clearly worth it.

Stay with her. Comfort her. Tell her you love her.

Give her a bowl of water.

You have to do what is right by her. Remember, this is not goodbye. I firmly believe all those we have loved in this life wait for us in the next.

Oh, that’s too bad. So sorry to hear this. Tough to lose our best friends. Hang in there and be with her to the end when she drifts off to sleep.

God love you. We went though this in august, it is so hard and honestly still struggling. But know, you have been a blessing to this dear creature and he/she to you. I believe pets are angels on very important missions from God.

Sorry to hear about your fur baby.
I had to put my cat of 12 years down in September.

Just remember you saved her from a possible bad life or even death and gave her a great loving home. She’s older and ready to go, and the best thing we can do is not let them suffer at the end.

it’s going to hurt and it’s okay to grieve a pet, so don’t let anyone try to rush your through it. It might take several months to even longer.

Take Care.
