Gregory Sierra, best known for his roles as Sgt. Miguel “Chano” Amanguale on “Barney Miller” and Julio Fuentes on “Sanford and Son,” died on Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, Calif., according to Orange County Health Dept. records. He was 83.
The New York-born-and-raised actor, of Puerto Rican descent, found success in his recurring role as Fred G. Sanford’s neighbor.
Sierra went on to star in movies like “The Towering Inferno,” “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” and “Vampires.”

Ron Glass passed away in 2016 (as did Abe Vigoda at the ripe age of 94) and Steve Landesberg in 2010. And of course, Jack Soo passed away in January 1979 at about the mid point of the series. He would be at the grand age of 103 if he were still with us today.
Abe Vigoda passed in early 2016 at age 94. He and Jack Soo (Yemana) and James Gregory (Luger) would be centenarians if they were still with us today.

BTW, this thread made me watch some Season 1 episodes on Roku. I just hit pause on “The Escape Artist” because I was able to see a close-up of the board and confirm that Chano’s last name was spelled “Amengual,” not “Amanguale” or whatever it is that the posted article claimed.
I’m seeing it spelled different ways. Wiki has it as “Amenguale” on Mr. Sierra’s credits and “Amanguale” on the Barney Miller page.
I just saw it written on the squadroom board as “Amengual.” Unless the spelling changed later in the show, there’s no reason to spell it otherwise. And with Chano being Puerto Rican, the name would not end in a silent E. (BTW, while “Amengual” is not an actual surname in Puerto Rico, “Mangual” is—it originated in Catalan-speaking Mallorca in the Balearic Islands off Spain’s Mediterranean coast, and was alternatively spelled “Mengual” in the old country.)
IMDb also has it spelled as “Amenguale.” The spelling on the wall assignment board might be in error. His deskplate (which he should have) should settle how it is spelled. I can’t remember if it was spelled with or without the “e.”
IMDb is edited through a process that can be described as “Wikipedia with moderation”; and thenwhen people edit Wikipedia, they often look to IMDb for information (despite IMDb *not* being recognized as a reliable source under Wikipedia rules).
I found a better source for the spelling. The Encyclopedia of Television Shows, 1925-2010, 2d ed. I used to edit IMDb awhile back. I gave up making contributions when they got rid of the message boards, because it was blatantly being done to silence non-leftists discussing the quality (usually horrid) of entertainment and the actors, directors, et al, of the time.
