Interestingly, though, the penalties for writing on paper money are limited to a maximum sentence of one year and a fine. As a “message in a bottle” sort of activity, it is sort of fun. Once in a while I’ll come across one of their bills and pop in the serial number to track it.
As long as it doesn’t obstruct the overall image it’s OK. The folks at “Where’s George” asked about it when they came up with their online bill tracking activity and Treasury said it was okay for a penned in, or little rubber stamp image.
