TV DETECTOR VANS ONCE PROWLED THE STREETS OF ENGLAND
Hack a day ^ | 18 Jan 2021 | Lewin Day

THE VAN IS COMING FOR YOU To ensure a regular income, the BBC runs enforcement operations under the TV Licencing trade name, the entity which is responsible for administering the system. Records are kept of licences and their expiry dates, and investigations are made into households suspected of owning a television who have not paid the requisite fees. To encourage compliance, TV Licencing regularly sends sternly worded letters to those who have let their licence lapse or have not purchased one. In the event this fails, they may arrange a visit from enforcement officers. These officers aren’t empowered to forcibly enter homes, so in the event a homeowner declines to cooperate with an investigation, TV Licencing will apply for a search warrant. This may be on the basis of evidence such as a satellite dish or antenna spotted on the roof of a dwelling, or a remote spied on a couch cushion through a window.

Based on an alleged BBC submission for a search warrant in recent years, there may be optical methods used in which reflected light from a television in a viewer’s home is compared to a live broadcast signal The BBC declined to answer the Freedom of Information request with any details of their methods, other than to say they have employed vehicles and handheld devices in enforcement efforts. However, given the multitude of broadcast, cable and satellite channels now available, the comparison effort would necessarily be much harder, leading some to suspect the days of the detector van are largely over.

I wonder if you’re streaming behind a VPN if they still can grab you?

It was a fee that paid for the various bbc channels. At least that was their explanation.

Yeah, I get it. Know about it as I’ve spent some time in the UK. Was shocked to learn (at that time) you had to pay a fee to own a TV. Even if the justification was rationalized by the electorate (and I know they absolutely hated the TV tax) there were much better ways to fund it. And now, assuming they still have the tax, with 5000 channels to choose from on cable/satellite and stream - they should just tax the broadcaster for a slice of the advertising revenues. From the Monty Python sketches I watched this weekend it seemed they did do some advertising and promotional marketing on the BBC shows even in 1970’s because they parodied them. Not sure if they showed commercials like our local affiliates did in the US but still, much more efficient to go to the source broadcaster than try to rope in the 60 odd million people watching it.

I was surprised about it too. That and some room temperature beers. Also learned real quickly why no one sets up a british themed cuisine restaurant.

At least i was there before crime made it impossible to go out at night in a big city without getting knifed. Dont ever try locking a bike anywhere, they come by with cordless angle grinders and take the bikes, even with people watching and cctv recording it.

Suppose we had to pay an extra fee just to drive during rush hour? Crazy, right?

In the United States it's called 'Congestion Pricing' and Democrat politicians as far back as New York City mayor Bloomberg have wanted to start it. It's comical to see them get "transportation professionals" who are all at the government teat complete reports supporting it.

Nursing Home Killer (NHK) Cuomo's plan for New York City was approved in 2019 to go into effect in 2022 at the earliest. With the same Cuomo shutting down New York for the Wuhanic Plague, they're not likely to have enough drivers to bother with.

There are other places in the United States where the politicians want to roll it out but they can't figure out how to steal it without losing even more money in the process.

Yeah. I ordered a tuna fish sandwich. They slathered the bread with butter! I’m sorry, maybe it’s just me, but tuna fish and mayo doesn’t need butter. Plus all those minces and pies they make with strange meats, like living in the 1400’s. Last time I was in London, went to the Savoy hotel at at Gordon Ramsey’s place. The support staff was excellent (drop a fork and they hear it, they bring you one before you can ask) but the waiting staff and food quality very mediocre.

Yeah there is a show on Amazon Prime about the CCTV camera system - they have scores of manned stations observing the cameras and dispatching police to various scenes. From a civil society point of view it’s cool. From a civil rights pov, not so sure I like it. They catch everyone from public urinators to bike thieves to real serious criminals. Spent a few hours watching that show during one of my “lockdowns”.

I lived in the UK in the seventies. My medical was “free” but not really. My taxes on my income and for national health were huge.

My son was born in England. My wife received good medical care for this. In an acute situation they are good. For chronic care they suck.

In london they used to send out police

But the police were getting knifed

So then theyd send out with some carrying weapons

And they started getting shot, and the thugs would take the guns off the shot cops

Then they would send some more heavily armed cops more like our swat team types

And theyd ambush these cops and take their weapons

So their solution now is to send no one, and no one goes out at night

Forgot about that. But yeah, British taxes paid for a lot of pedos. I try to avoid conspiracy theories devoid of solid evidence but there definitely has been problems of this nature in the UK political/LEO establishment with the roving grooming gangs the cops are afraid of upsetting the immigrant communities... and I was never a pizzagate believer but if it can happen there...

But if you don’t pay your TV tax, get a swat raid.

That antenna design is referred to as an NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) and is designed for use at High Frequency for short-range communications. HF is usually thought of as long-range because the antenna is mounted higher with a design that sends the signal towards the horizon to propagate further. As the NVIS name states, the signal is designed to go nearly vertical to take advantage of the skywave returning to earth closer to the originating station. This method requires the antenna to be closer to the earth so propagation towards the horizon is minimized. This is a good technique and resource for use when VHF/UHF repeaters are unavailable or unreliable in disaster zones.

I was stationed in Italy in the late 70s - they also taxed you for having a radio in your car, so a radio wasn’t a standard feature. Because of this, they didn’t always do a proper grounding of the system so if you were in a house watching TV or listening to a radio, and a car w/o the grounding went by, you’d get the pops of the plugs firing as interference.

“The British have a whole different view of the world.
Their individual rights come from the royalty, not God, and most are happy to live that way.

That’s why we in the US broke away. And were able to sustain freedom for quite a long time. Sadly it’s now going down the tubes.”

I agree, and I’ll (now) take the UK’s system over ours. One reason why is that, while both countries have minorities, only a very small number of them want conservatives dead there. The rest are ok with mutual coexistence.

“My taxes on my income and for national health were huge.”

I never thought to ask about the additional tax burden.

A super-smart guy.
US Army Intelligence Officer that moved into a bank exec position in London but spent years in Moscow, fluent in Russian and a few other languages...Many photos of him and Yeltsin deep inside the Kremlin.

At the funeral one of my relatives that was his executor, said, “you knew he was a spy?”

I had no idea and never thought of such.

Thinking back I can see it.
