During the Obama administration, I had a German friend, Martin, who worked here 12 years on a work visa for my wife's uncle (he was a skilled mechanic, carpenter and electrician), bought a house, married, had kids, paid his taxes and yet was abruptly told his visa would not be renewed and he'd have to go back to Germany.

I jokingly told him to add an "ez" to the end of his name (Martinez) and the government would let him stay forever and even give him lots of free stuff.

He laughed but it was true. Unfortunately, his appeals to keep his visa failed and he had to return to Germany.
