A Montreal police officer pulled over a woman heading to work at 4 a.m. Tuesday, demanding to search her lunch bag as he questioned why she was out before the provincial curfew lifted.
“I got my letter out of my glove compartment and he asked for my ID, I gave him that,” Sarah Vresk told CBC. “He then asked me what was in my bag.”
At that point, Vresk asked why it mattered he see her lunch bag when she showed him proof from her employer, a snow-removal contractor, that she needed to be out during curfew.
The officer threatened her with a ticket, saying the letter is just a piece of paper, and accused her of delaying detainment by being uncooperative and refusing to show him the bag.
Vresk finally acquiesced and the officer returned to his car to check her credentials while his partner continued the questioning. After the whole ordeal, Vresk drove away without a ticket.
A criminal defence lawyer in Montreal said a police intervention should end as soon as a person proves they need to be out during curfew. “It’s none of his business what’s in the bag,” Jeffrey Boro said.
“He has no reasonable or probable grounds to search. He hasn’t got the power to do that and the woman has certain constitutional rights to be free of an abusive search.”
The Montreal police department said officers should address each situation with “good judgment.”
“Before imposing a sanction on an offender, they will carry out the necessary research and analyze each situation according to its context and its particularities,” the police force said in a statement.
But, it’s up to citizens to prove they’re allowed out during curfew.

Beat ‘em by 3!
Yup,I haven’t seen much of Canada but in what little I’ve seen Timmy’s is as visible as McDonald’s is here.
Yeah. The “I had a traumatic experience from police” crybabies so lemme cry on FR Freepers. I think the count is 4..
You mean Tim Horton’s? Im from Sask originally then Vancouver. TH coffee is far superior than Starbucks, and stronger. The bad part you go to downtown Vancouver, there’s an SB every 2 blocks and ALWAYS full. So much for patriotic canadians..
So Montreal is now officially a police state.
“the woman has certain constitutional rights”
Ah, I see her lawyer is also an aspiring comedian.
Right, because if you prefer cops actually follow the law instead of being thugs enforcing state dictates, that makes you “Antifa”.
They might be smuggling a bunch of wuhan bats in their trunk. Just shut up and comply with the unlawful directives, what are you, a domestic terrorist?
The “I had a traumatic experience from police” crybabies
Like Ashli Babbitt? She can’t cry on FR about it though, so you should be happy.
so every cop is a tyrant to you right? Gotcha. Did a cop feel ya when you were arrested and did you start crying? That must been an experience. s/
“so every cop is a tyrant to you right?”
Nope, only the ones who act like tyrants. Don’t put words in peoples’ mouths unless you want to look like an ass.
Oh wait, it’s too late for that.
Nah. Ive seen you on whenever there’s a “I hate cops” thread comes up. Same ole bunch..
Yes, and you’re always here defaming anyone who objects to having their civil liberties trampled on as a “cop hater”.
Don’t you have some civilian to harass for not wearing a mask while they walk their dog?
Montreal police? Is that a joke or something? Trudeau’s Marxist reach is long and deep.
