Pet owners and veterinarians are being warned about recalled Sportmix pet food products now linked to the deaths of more than 70 dogs and the illnesses of 80 others.
Midwestern Pet Food is expanding its recall of dog and cat food sold online by retailers nationwide as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigates potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins. The recalled products include "05" in the date/lot code, which identifies them as having been made in the Oklahoma plant. More than 1,000 lot codes are affected.
The company in December recalled only certain lots of its Sportmix product after the deaths of at least 28 canines and the illnesses of eight others. The Missouri Department of Agriculture tested multiple product samples and found high levels of aflatoxins, which are toxins produced by mold that can cause death and illness in pets, according to the FDA.
The toxins can be present even if there is no visible mold, the agency cautioned.

I’ll remember this as people yell at me not to feed my dogs human food. “It’s bad for them” they tell me...
Yeah, what you think dog food is, and where did it come from?
How old were the dogs? If they were over 8, it should automatically be counted as a COVID death.
No comment.. other than..
We pay almost as much on food for our pets ( and then they eat ours too) ..
sorry to hear all these deaths occurred and sympathy to all the owners.
My friend feeds her dogs, chicken, brown rice and veggies for meals...They are all over 10 and doing great.....
Ask them if they've ever watched a dog eat raw cat poo, straight out of a kitty litter pan. I have seen it with my own eyes (though not my dog). It's apparently a not-uncommon problem in households with both cats and dogs.
Dogs can eat a wide variety of things, including things that even humans won't eat.
Aflatatoxins are produced by Aspergillus flavius, but many other fungi also produce mycotoxins.
Mine gets ground Turkey, carrot, peas, spinach and sweet potato.
Feel good?
When it’s from the litter box, it’s called treats with sprinkles.

Years ago my landlady couldn’t keep a garden..Her dogs kept eating zucchini blossoms and other veggies, right from her garden...
I had a friend who was a missionary and out on the field, he would cook up cornmeal and beef ( bones, gristle, etc)scraps and feed his dogs that.
He said they thrived.

Goes to show human food is okay as long as it’s healthy food...UNLESS IT ALL COMES FROM CHINA....Dole peaches come from China...I was bummed when I read the label....
Hell, this is probably just a Dry Run before Joe and The Ho do this to the parents of the kids they send off to "Re-Education Camps".
A lot of dogfood is made in china.
Feel good?
There are dog food companies in the Midwest owned by the Chinese.
My heart goes out to the owners of the dogs who died and to those whose dogs got sick. I’ve done research on this company; they also make Earthborn holistic ($$) cat food, which my cat likes. I’m trying to find out if Earthborn has any of the same source for its ingredients.
