Major-General John A. Dix,

Commanding at New York:

Whereas there has been wickedly and traitorously printed and published this morning in the New York World and New York Journal of Commerce, newspapers printed and published in the city of New York, a false and spurious proclamation purporting to be signed by the President and to be countersigned by the Secretary of State, which publication is of a treasonable nature, designed to give aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States and to the rebels now at war against the Government and their aiders and abettors, you are therefore hereby commanded forthwith to arrest and imprison in any fort or military prison in your command the editors, proprietors, and publishers of the aforesaid newspapers, and all such persons as, after public notice has been given of the falsehood of said publication, print and publish the same with intent to give aid and comfort to the enemy; and you will hold the persons so arrested in close custody until they can be brought to trial before a military commission for their offense. You will also take possession by military force of the printing establishments of the New York World and Journal of Commerce, and hold the same until further orders, and prohibit any further publication therefrom.

A. LINCOLN.

A lot of things have happened in US history that have trampled on people’s rights, regardless of the Constitution.

It’s why I try to tell people that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but step two is to know that the US is not a Norman Rockwell painting. If Biden is sworn in, it is going to get very, very bad. We already enjoy less freedom in many ways than people in the old Soviet Block. This is just the beginning.

The left will use what Lincoln did as legal precedent for what they will do to us.

The Roman Empire took a long time to fall. Twatter and facefook weren’t around then.

There was a thoroughgoing debate back in the 70's about whether or not conservatives should approve of the Lincoln administration. Harry Jaffa was a big fan of Lincoln. I can't remember who were the big anti-Lincoln expositors.

It seemed like an interesting coalition of libertarians and paleoconservatives believed that Lincoln was the president who provided the first example of using war or crisis to undermine Constitutional freedoms and gather power to the federal government.

The actual collapse of the Roman Empire took less than three years. You need to read Gibbons’ “Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire” and see just how fragile a superpower truly is.

I remember reading that when news of Lincoln’s assassination spread, several newspaper buildings were burned down, even as far away as Oregon.

That was the West only. The Eastern Empire endured for another 1,000 years until the fall of Constaninople in 1453.
