EVERY YEAR, WEATHER enthusiasts eagerly watch and wait for signs that the polar vortex, a mass of cold air spinning around the Arctic, might meander south, sending cold and snow into the lower latitudes.
Their wait might soon be over—and if you’re not a meteorologist, you may be surprised to learn that it’s because of a recent spike in Arctic temperatures.
Specifically, temperatures high in the stratosphere above Siberia. In the first week of January, they increased from about minus 92 degrees Fahrenheit to 8 degrees Fahrenheit. While these “sudden stratospheric warming” events happen to some extent every year, this one is categorized as a major event and is less common.
The mass of extremely warm air threw the freezing polar vortex out of balance, shoving it off its North Pole axis so forcefully that it in effect split in two, as if growing a pair of legs: one over North America and one over Europe.

Two years worth with cover and a transparent weatherproof top.
It rings when you drop it.
Kindling? Who needs it?
Noooo! Damn You Global Warming!
I hit a snow squall in VA yesterday what was almost whiteout for better than 30 minutes. They’d gotten a little over the weekend and it was already covered in the fields. My wife and I were coming back from a belated Christmas get-together with my family, so I told my wife, here’s our holiday snow. Normally up there in the mountains, you can count on a good bit left over between storms, but there were only a few dirty snow piles left over from two weeks ago. It’s tradition for me to make a snowball and hit my wife in the butt when she isn’t looking. LOL
With all the hot air coming out of the District of Communism.......
“The article “explains” that Global Warming causes the Polar Vortices by pushing the cold air away from the poles. This year it’s so bad it created 2 Polar Vortices!!!! Horrors!”
Perhaps the other way around?
The unusually cold air brakes lose from the polar regions. The stratospheric warming occurs in compensation of the colder air moving southward.
Lets hope so. The Rocky Mtns need the water.
I've got something special planned for you!
a big cup of hot cocoa
and a big Maine Coon cat.
We call it ‘winter’. Liberals have hissy fits.
Global warming means colder temps? Makes perfect sense.
Good time to bring in another cord of wood.
Here in beautiful mid-Michigan weather so far has been mild. So far we’ve only had one snow event that required shoveling. Over the last few years, we’ve only had 3-4 shovelable days each year.
I read an article at mlive.com recently that said real winter is coming. Not seeing it in the current 10 day forecast but I expect it will arrive shortly thereafter.
Here in the Seattle area, it’s been a very wet fall and winter, but not cold. We’ve had a few nights with a mild freeze, and about an inch of snow.
Marmot? Nah. I’ve got my Eddie Bauer down alpine jacket ready. (It’s good to about 6000M supposedly.)
They hype this up to protect global warming hysteria when big parts of North America and Europe fall into a deep freeze.
Must be a local colloquialism because she looks like a pretty blonde to me. If she is not insulted by being called a Maine Coon Cat I guess it’s okay. Down here similar phrases would get you knock on your butt.
