EXCLUSIVE: Nick Carson suffers from auto brewery syndrome, which turns carbohydrates into alcohol in his body, and has to carry a breathalyser around with him at all times
A man whose body acts like a brewery says his rare condition means he can get blind drunk eating a slice of cake.
Nick Carson, 62, suffers from auto brewery syndrome, a disorder that causes his body to turn carbohydrates into alcohol.
It leaves him intoxicated without touching a drop of alcohol.
The condition also makes Nick crave Victoria sponge cake – which then leaves him so sozzled he can pass out – the same way an alcoholic would crave a drink.
He added: “I can go from being stone-cold sober to being three times the driving limit in minutes.
“The effect isn’t pleasant and I have sections of my memory where I have no idea what I’ve done.”
Nick developed ABS after being exposed to strong chemicals while at work almost two decades ago.
But it took years for him to finally be diagnosed, after his wife Karen saw the condition on an episode of TV drama Doc Martin. The condition’s erratic nature means he has no idea where or when he might get drunk and pass out.
He has to carry a breathalyser with him at all times.
Nick first noticed the symptoms in 2003. He recalled: “I had horrendous cravings for Victoria sponge, and I don’t usually have a sweet tooth.
“I would have killed for a slice.
“Sometimes people treat my condition as a joke and say I’ll be cheap to take out, but actually it’s horrible.
“When you wake up on the other side, there’s a whole lot of psychological damage. You feel so guilty about what you said and did the night before.”
Nick, from Lowestoft, Suffolk, now wants to spread awareness of ABS.
He said: “I hope sharing my story will help. Now I know a lot more about the condition it’s become a little easier to manage. I think we’re coping with it well.”
Shouldn't he be on Keto or something?
anything refined, refined sugars, flour, pastas, starches
that sucks
i wonder if anyone’s tried long term probiotics/digestive enzyme/prebiotic treatments to attempt to reduce/reverse this
to me it sounds like the guy lost good gut bacteria, and yeast/candida remained, and now hes just a fermentation vat for various refined sugars and starches
He certainly looks as if he’s had a few carbs to me.
Maybe he doesn’t want to fix it.
i researched it more
it is because gut bacteria get messed up and fungal (yeast) overgrow because of it and ferment sugars and starches in the gut
taking high quality prebiotics, digestive enzymes and probiotics will restore gut health and balance
avoiding all refined carbs is necessary while doing this else the candida wont be reduced in population
they’ve done fecal transplants to cure someone of this, which is another way of getting good bacteria back into the gut system. but you’d still have to avoid refined carbs in order for you not to keep fueling the yeast population.
LOL
maybe you didnt read the article
A feature, not a bug.
Gives new meaning to the terms “Hit Me!” and “Taking a shot”
Life of the party!
For those not in the know, it's from "When Harry Met Sally." Here's the full scene...
"I'll have what she's having."
I love BIlly Joel asking "Are you OK?"
I don’t know what a fecal transplant is but my first guess was that it involved eating poop. I’ll pass on researching that lol.
He probably runs into some doctors who don’t believe that is a real condition.
I have to carry bottles every where I go.
There was an episode of “Doc Martin” which had a man with this same problem.
Sounds like yeast overgrowth. Oral nystatin would work..
Am enjoying a big brownie for breakfast with hope in my eye, but it’s looking like I’ll have to go to the backup...
