Rush - The Spirit of Radio (1980)

"The Spirit of Radio" is a song released in 1980 by the Canadian rock band Rush from their album Permanent Waves.

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson offers some insight into the meaning of the lyrics: “That song was really a statement of where radio was going, where it had been. Growing up in the early 70s, FM radio was such a free forum for music; you’d have DJs who would play stuff for an hour. They’d just talk about the songs; there were no commercials or anything. So free-form, really a platform for expanding music at the time. And then it was moving more towards a format, and away from that freedom, becoming more regulated, more about selling airtime. It just speaks about that, really.”

The cover art sparked some controversy because of the appearance of the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline on the newspaper. After a complaint from the Chicago Tribune, artist Hugh Syme changed the text to "Dewei Defeats Truman." Some later versions of the cover, such as for the Rush Remasters CD release, have the headline blanked out and it appears simply as a white box. The billboards in the distance were changed from Coca-Cola (which objected to the use of its logo) to include each band member's name in similar typestyle.[citation needed] The "200 Gram Vinyl LP w/Download" 2015 reissues use the altered "Dewei Defeats Truman" newspaper art while leaving the Coca-Cola signs with the band members names unchanged.

The background scene comes from a photo, taken by Flip Schulke, of the Galveston Seawall in Texas during Hurricane Carla on September 11, 1961. The woman in the foreground is Canadian model Paula Turnbull, who was also featured on Exit...Stage Left (1981).

It’s like a self-contained, micro-reel-to-reel.

Last night I posted in the
Amazon “raising problems” for Parler about their servers thread

The Clouds prepare for battle.

In the dark and brooding silence
Bruised and sullen storm clouds
Have the light of day obscured

Looming low and ominous
In twilight premature

Thunder heads are rumbling
In a distant overture...

All at once, the clouds are parted
Light streams down in bright unbroken beams...

Follow men’s eyes as they look to the skies
The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams...
