We actually have a lot of steep stairways built into the hills here. Not quite as extreme as that one but still a pretty good workout if you are into walking exercise. Here is a section of the Fisherman's steps where they traveled from their homes down to the sea then back with their catch later in the day. It's pretty steep and the steps are irregular so you may have a 6 inch riser on one step then an 18 inch one on the next, so you are constantly using different muscles in your legs.
