I bought red and green butter lettuce from the 99¢ store last year and planted the roots out in my tiny little raised bed.
I got lettuce off of the red one three times!
Aside from a few types of Butterhead lettuce that I like, I am going with all ‘cut and come again’ loose leaf varieties of lettuce this upcoming growing season.
Of course, NOW, I’ll see if I can get the Butterheads to re-grow, too!
So many ideas, so little time! :)
Gardening can be expensive. When you are growing a homestead garden you want to make sure that the cost of the garden doesn’t exceed the value of the crop that you will reap from it. Here’s some gardening tricks to help you get the most from your garden without breaking the budget.
I ALWAYS end up sowing more than I reap.
That’s why it is a HOBBY with me...a little less expensive than photography!
Things I save to use in the winter months:
Egg shells - dried & crushed finely (blender or food processor , I add them to the planting holes of my tomatoes and peppers for extra calcium. Also, sprinkle around young plants if slugs are a problem - they will get cut it they crawl over them.
Newspapers - Black & white pages - shredded, I add them to my compost piles for a ‘brown’ addition. I make paper seed-starting pots from them and I twist them into fire starters for bonfires. I also put a handful of ‘shreds’ in my under-the-sink compost bucket. Really keeps the odor down!
‘Clam shell’ clear containers with covers - the kind that lettuce mixes and other veggies sometimes come in. When used with Jiffy Pellets, (water-expanding ‘plugs’ of soil and peat) it makes a nice little ‘greenhouse’ for starting seedlings.
Egg Cartons (paper) - can be used for starting seedlings - I like to start Nasturtium and Peas of Sweet peas in them. You can plant the entire little ‘cup’ as it will degrade. Good for plants that don’t like their roots disturbed. I cut up the top covers and add them to the compost pile.
Plastic/Vinyl Window Blind Slats - cut up, these make great outdoor plant markers. Use a waterproof Sharpie pen, and they usually last the entire season and can be re-used indefinitely. I have some for a decade, now. I’m going to have to find another blind to replace, soon! ;)
One for the black bird,
One for the crow,
One for the farmer,
And one to grow. :)
I picked up some good tips - passing it on. Thanks!
[Getting mowers serviced today - YAY!!! Waiting for the guys to arrive. They’re going to get Little Buddy running/serviced which means I’ll be able to pull a trailer again - LB didn’t run all last year. Clyde, the big 920, is getting a new belt & servicing, too. As soon as the grass starts growing, the mowers should be ready to roll.]
Good morning and thank you! I need all the money saving tips I can get!
Hello from the Atlanta area, where it is 40degrees and rainy. Tomorrow I get to rejuvenate 8’ shrubs down to 1’. The weather should be sunny and dry tomorrow.
PS: Excuse my typos please. I have arthritis and shake a good bit.
I planted those living lettuce heads with the roots attached just to see if it would work.
I love getting my money’s worth out of something.
:)
FYI: Johnny’s Seeds is only taking home gardener orders on Tue-Thurs each week. Commercial growers can order any time.
I guess my order can wait until tomorrow. It was just WANTS, not NEEDS. Those are already in hand. ;)
2021 Orders
Is Johnny’s restricting orders this season?
Given the current volume of orders, we will be accepting home garden orders only on Tuesdays through Thursdays (ET) at this time. Commercial farmers can place new orders at any time but must log-in to their website account to complete the order. This change was made to allow us to appropriately process and ship the orders we currently have taken. We are doing our best to manage the significant growth in interest from new commercial farmers and home gardeners this year. We apologize for the inconvenience.
When should I order seeds for 2021, to ensure I get the products I want to purchase this year?
We saw a huge surge of interest in growing last year and expect that interest to continue in 2021. For that reason, we encourage you to place orders early. Ordering early will better ensure you get the varieties you’re looking for and provide additional time for order processing and shipping prior to your ideal planting dates.
Do you anticipate seed shortages this year?
Our team has been working hard to stock up on the high-quality seeds you depend on. In any given year, we experience seed shortages and seed crop failures, limiting the availability of some varieties. We do not expect any seed shortages outside of what can occur in an average year.
There are some tools and supplies in limited stock this season, due to COVID-19 impacts.
I do the TP roll starters, too. Also good for Peas, Sweet Pea flowers and Nasturtium; anything that doesn’t like the roots disturbed. ;)
You can get 70+ in a standard flat...maybe 82? I don’t remember...
78, as I recall. 6 rows wide and 13 long.
Weird. I ordered online a few weeks ago (already received my shipment) and did not see any mention of split ordering days.
Good afternoon. Good advice BUMP!
I think they just started getting overwhelmed as people have now had time to look through their catalog.
I put the six things I want in my cart and will see if they’re still there in the morning. Probably. I order non-mainstream varieties, and these are just my WANTS. I already have my, ‘NEEDS SEEDS’ for next season. ;)
