'We have nowhere to go': Family forced to relocate due to sinkhole

Ashley Crabb doesn’t know when she’ll be able to return home. She, her children and her neighbors on Riverside Drive could be living in hotels or couch-surfing for weeks while city crews work to repair the water main break that flooded their homes on Saturday.

"Honestly, we lost everything," Crabb said. "You get somewhere and then something happens, because we just started getting this house together. We had drywall down there to work on the house and everything. Kids' brand new Christmas presents, all of our medicine, everything we own is in there."

The 60-inch water main — one of the largest in the Greater Cincinnati Water Works system — broke late Saturday morning, creating a sinkhole so wide and deep that it swallowed a car parked along Riverside.

“When we first went out there, it was just parked in front of the other cars still," said the Rev. Jason Williams, who preaches at St. Rose Church nearby. "Within about an hour, the car had shifted a little this way, and then within another hour, it had done its nose dive."

At the same time, dirty water poured into the first floor of Crabb's home. Almost nothing was salvageable.

Nope. I did Murder Hornet insurance, but I think someone is screwing with our timeline and those things just went away.

I’m thinking you need flood insurance to cover something like that. I believe there is a different variety or cost structure if you don’t live in a flood plain. Anyone that lives where there is underground water lines, and public sewage, should really talk with their insurance agent.

Sinkholes aren’t covered by homeowner’s policy in Florida unless you either have a rider (which are expensive/ridiculous to the point of being pointless), or your house is condemned/totaled.

A sinkhole doing $50k damage to your house is a nightmare scenario. It is much better if the earth opens up and swallows your house whole (without you in it).

Because sinkholes never occur in the country.

Sinkholes occur naturally here in Florida and not all of them are in the city. They can occur anywhere.

It's the luck of the draw.

Natural sinkholes are unavoidable. Sinkholes created by a 5 foot dia water main are.
