Wisconsin announces 1st wolf hunting season since 2014

State's Department of Natural Resources said details need to be finalized

Wolf hunting is coming back to Wisconsin.

While all of the details are still being figured out, it was recently announced that Wisconsin will be holding its first wolf hunting season in over a half-decade. The season is scheduled to begin in November.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that it is planning a wolf harvest season for the fall of 2021. According to the announcement, the decision was made after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed gray wolves from the federal endangered species list on Jan. 4.

This decision returns management of wolf populations to state authorities.

Keith Warnke, administrator of Fish, Wildlife and Parks Division for the Wisconsin DNR, told Fox 21, "It is tremendously important to us to have a good, robust, strong population of wolves and we know we can do that. We’ve managed hunting seasons in the past and we’ve maintained a good, strong population of wolves."

Fox 21 reports that it is estimated that 1,000 wolves live in Wisconsin, which is reportedly an increase from previous years. Details for the upcoming hunt are still being finalized and the Wisconsin DNR reportedly will consult with the state’s Native American tribes before setting a harvest cap.

They have 1,000 wolves. That’s 999 too many.

Probably, the bigger problem will be getting a tag. The last season there, 2012 or 13, there were just over 200 tags, about 40% of which went to tribal members. I don’t hunt wolves, but it may have been a quota system. Might have been more than 200 tags which become invalid as zones hit their quotas, maximum just over 200. They were kind of expensive for non residents, at least by deer season standards.

Beau is very much looking forward to this, though he says to expect lawsuits from out of state via the ASPCA, the Humane Society and the likes of Sierra Club, et al.

They had one dog killed this season by a wolf while hunting Black Bear. It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t fun.

Wolves are beautiful and majestic and mysterious. They are also killing machines that shouldn’t be living anywhere near people or domesticated animals.

Hi there! I saw one in Deerfield township (eastern Dane county) a few winters ago. I stopped the truck to watch him as he trotted across a snowy field. (see ya on the garden thread!)

Don’t kill the predators — they eat liberal hikers.

I put wolves up higher than Democrats on the chain of life. At least they only hunt and kill to survive. Democrats hunt, destroy and kill for power. To me that makes them lower than nature’s creatures and much more dangerous.
