Thanks, looks like a nice setup. Of course you could sell me swamp land for all I know about radios at the moment (lol), but I appreciate it as a good starting point.

Am I correct to presume I could do both voice and digital with this?

The ICOM site says this works RX Frequencies: 0.030-74.800 but it didnt give units. Is this MHz and equivalent to 4 meter down to 10000 meter (is there really an antenna for 10K meter?) or did I goon this up?

I presume its not 2 meter and I would still need my VHF handheld for that.

It will operate across that entire range, but as it comes from the factory only the ham bands allow for transmit.

There is a single surface-mount diode that if removed will allow transmission on the entire frequency range...

You will need an inexpensive 2 meter radio for vhf...

You can get a fine 25watt mobile radio for 79.99 delivered at Amazon...covers 2 meters and 440.

The 7300 has SSB, CW, RTTY, AM, FM modes.

RTTY is a sort of old-school digital mode...text transmissions like the old news teletype machines...works well. most any rig can do some form of digital with an adapter.
