California Is Closing the Door to Gas in New Homes
Scientific American ^ | 1/04/2021 | Anne C. Mulkern

California's top energy bosses soon will decide when to snuff out natural gas flames in new homes.

The seismic move toward omitting some gas appliances comes as the California Energy Commission retools state building codes for energy-efficient homes.

The agency now plans to tighten rules on natural gas for home heating and hot water, a code update that would take effect in 2023.

Environmental groups want a complete ban on natural gas in new homes, but the state commission has signaled that isn't likely right now.

The California Building Industry Association, a trade group whose members develop 85% of new buildings in the state, is girding for ever-tougher rules over the next five years.

"The writing's on the wall," said Bob Raymer, technical director with the industry group. "They're going to want electric space and water heating come 2026."

I think everyone should jump on board with this plan, in fact, it doesn't go far enough. To Demonstrate our approval we need to Immediately Mandate that ALL Public Employee's, and any other person that receives Money or Aid from the State Shall Be Required to be 100% Electric in their Homes. They should all be Forced to drive an electric car too. SHOW US HOW IT'S DONE, YOU FIRST

The irony is it’ll take a lot of gas to deal with the increase demand for power, so it’s an o&g win.

these leftist really hate the petroleum/oil/gas industry

Since they didn't contribute significantly to DJTs campaign, I won't lose sleep over their industry.

Californians will have to learn to eat all of their food raw, or learn how to cook it over dog or their own feces. Just like the plains Indians used Buffalo dung for fires.

Growing up on Long Island The occasional T storm would knock out power. Forget about talking about ice storms, blizzards, nor’easters, cat I hurricane s. We were without power for two weeks in the winter of 1979. Burning furniture. The dogs were shivering. The dogs! We had no phone no one did.

We were able to cook, to boil water

I would never have a house without a fireplace never without gas stove.

They will be making well built older homes more valuable

- until the commie dictators mandate any older home, in order to be sold, must, upon sale, have household appliances converted to all electric and the house converted to use 100% solar in the daytime, with the grid only accessed as needed.

Newer homes already this year in California have to be built with solar as the primary electric power.

I understand that regardless of solar and wind energy in CA, electricity in CA is periodically off because of wind that threatens to spread fires in land neglected by various bureaucrats.

So eventually no natural gas or year around reliable electricity in CA.

Is rent still high in CA?

A few years ago I moved from Michigan, where in my area everyone used gas to Maryland where it seems to be a mix of electric, fuel oil and gas.

No one is satisfied with electric. Some can’t afford to heat their homes at all.

Fuel oil can be very expensive too.

The main criteria for the house I bought was natural gas.

And how is that electricity going to be generated for these marvelous new all-electric homes?

Back in the 50s all-electric homes were briefly popular because nuclear power was going to be "too cheap to meter." That pipe-dream faded away.

Actually California is Rich with the Potential of Geothermal energy and at this minute they are harvesting that geothermal energy by converting it into electricity.

I never realized it but California is a state built upon Volcanoes. They seem to be all over the place.

If there is any state that can go without Natural Gas or Coal its California and I’m Not a resident there.

By the Way they are also Fracking Like hell there as well.

Well, it makes it far easier to drop power on that God-forsaken “country” than any other form of power. The Chinks will love CA even more!

Yes. California rolling blackouts are done for two reasons: 1) as a precaution to make sure wind-blown power transmission and distribution lines (”galloping” lines) don’t start wild fires and 2) insufficient supply threatening the entire system with collapse. #2 is largely caused by banning coal, shutting down existing nukes, and banning natural gas fired power plants.

You haven’t seen blackouts until every car in California has to be charged every night. Then you’ll see blackouts. Legendary for sure. Stupid people in California and now Massachusetts. Coming soon to the other 48 I’m sure.
