Plant-based alternatives may still be a work in progress but our overexploited oceans, and the fish in them, may force our hand

Illustration: Cha Pornea/The Guardian My friend Henry walked into my kitchen and eyed the can of vegan “skallops” on the counter. My goal for the week was to try as many vegan seafood items as possible. I wanted to know if I could learn to love them, and if they could replace seafood the way Beyond Meat has replaced burgers in my house.
“You’re not really going to eat those, are you?” he said while raising an eyebrow. The skallops looked pale and gelatinous.
“I’m going to try,” I said.
“One of my very first jobs was at a restaurant on the Cape,” he said. “I had to plunge my hand into a bucket of freezing cold sea water and take the penis off of scallops before they were served.”
“So you’d try vegan scallops instead?” I asked, hopeful I could enlist him in my taste test.
“Never,” he said, looking resolute.

Seriously!
Hell, I would rather have smoked carp.
Pale and gelatinous...
Describes one of my exes
Did it smell like fish?
And every FReeper said.....
Vegan? Not in this lifetime (or the next)! Vegetarian? Ditto! "Organic"? Don't make me laugh!
We sell “imitation crab meat” at the store I work at. I haven’t had the courage to read the label on the back to see what it really is but, I figure my customers either know or don’t care and that’s all I care about. It’s a good seller so I order it.
Smoked carp is damn good!
I’m really worried about this vegan thing because I swear thats why the left is so bonkers, that in combination with pot smoking has got to be impacting a lot of people cognitively.
I know it is.
If it’s vegan, it’s not seafood. Putting two words together doesn’t automatically create something new. Seafood is NOT vegan. By its definition. No dispute.
Putting “Vegan” before “seafood” doesn’t mean there is a new entity that is both vegan and fish.
Like saying “vegetarian meat.” Or “non-dairy milk.”
I just find it odd that so many people are rejecting the natural world.
It really is strange, you’re right.
So what did you do in your last job Bob?
..l But I’ve never been a fan of seafood.
I lived too long in New Orleans, have trouble getting good stuff since moved away (x local wild trout)
Fake crab is usually pollock or other cheap/trash fish processed and formed. It’s not really bad, but why?
“imitation crab meat” is pollack fish and I eat it cuz it cheap and tasty and its real seafood.
... If it’s vegan, it’s not seafood.
Well, seaweed is seafood
Weird resume
