Should straight actors still play gay characters? 'It's complicated'
NBC News / Comcast ^ | January 2, 2020 | By Julie Compton

In early December, Netflix dropped its highly anticipated musical comedy “The Prom,” starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James Corden asfading Broadway stars who set out to help a lesbian teen take her girlfriend to the prom. The film, helmed by out director Ryan Murphy, got mixed reviews, but some lambasted it as “homophobic” and “offensive” because of the casting of Corden, a straight actor, in what they saw as an “aggressively flamboyant” caricature of a gay man.

Erik Anderson, who runs the film site Awards Watch, called “The Prom” a “gorgeous and vibrant production” but tweeted that Corden’s “performance is gross and offensive, the worst gayface in a long, long time.”

The controversy threw fuel on an already simmering debate: Should non-LGBTQ actors still be cast in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer roles?

There’s no shortage of celebrities playing queer characters in television and film. But increasingly, LGBTQ actors are getting tapped to play these roles, and many of them feel only they have the authenticity and experience to bring these characters to life.

Transgender actor Zoey Luna, 19, who starred in the 2020 film “The Craft: Legacy,” said she brings “real representation” to the character of Lourdes, a teenage witch who is trans.

“I think when a cis person goes in to play a trans role,” Luna said of cisgender, or nontransgender, actors, “they're bringing more of a projection.”

While straight and cisgender actors are given many opportunities to play roles outside their own gender and sexuality, many gay and trans actors say they are given far less leeway. This is another reason, in addition to the authenticity factor, that some argue queer roles should be reserved for queer actors.

Eventually, they will all be replaced by computer animation, and it won’t be a moment too soon.

The problem is finding a cross-dresser who’s attractive enough to put up on-screen. Hiring from the general population rather than restricting the search to cross-dressers just makes box office sense. That, and not prejudice, is why Hollywood has traditionally cast people who were not of a given race or sexual inclination for various roles. Productions need to make money, and audiences mainly want photogenic people onscreen. Sometimes, the stars align and the casting is authentic, but other times, it’s not. The people issuing the loudest complaints should consider putting their money where their mouths are, and financing productions that authentically cast.

I think nobody should take any part that isn’t exactly like him, her, or themself. There’s simply no place in life for “acting.”

Only if they want to go broke.

We have seen the Massive drop in theatre seat sales internationally.

We, well if you want to keep pushing lbtqrstxyz***. Lifestyle and Woke rewriting of history as well as having scripts written by the pizza delivery guy, have intellectual rants by hysterical actors and actresses ( no I am Not PC) as they scream at us that we are idiots for not doing what they want.

So nopes, straight should not play gay nor gay as straight... Go make your own movies and tv shows that cater to your lifestyle...which previously had been tried and failed to pay the bills, we don’t care.

Go woke, go broke.

Only NBC, an maybe CNN, could consider this to be serious news. This nonsense matters only to those who live in an alternate reality.

The character Niles Crane on “Frasier” was straight. But he was played by a gay actor. Enough of this reckless appropriation! I demand that all copies of “Frasier” be collected and burned.

When you hear and see gay men talking like that it is all affected. Lisping, femme emoting and bitchy reactions.

And drag queens are offensive caricatures of women.

Isn’t a transexual already presenting a projection of what they think women are?

There have even been articles of medical referrals so they can get consultation on how to walk etc like a woman.

Enough! < /Drama Queen drama >

There have been homosexuals portraying heterosexuals in movies since the talkies were beginning. And it continues on television into the modern era.

Having written 14 novels, seven of which are on Amazon, I have thoroughly studied how stories are constructed. A TV show or movie has so little time to develop the character that you can only play to the stereotype or against it. If you try anything else you almost always end up with a forgettable plastic character with no memorable traits. Playing to the stereotype is a priest who sacrifices all for good. Playing against it, the priest is an evil character who does bad things and enjoys it.

Nothing in a story should be there without some purpose in the plot. If you make a character gay then that had better be some significant plot driver or it will be a meaningless and confusing non sequitur. The viewer will come to believe that the character’s gayness is just thrown in for political reasons and it will detract from the story. (Examples of virtue signaling politics in movies are the all female “Ghostbusters” and the plethora of weird super hero movies with “diverse” characters. All that I can think of have been financial failures.)

If the gay character plays to the stereotype, he will be a clown and couldn’t carry any serious plot forward except in a comedic way. If he plays against the stereotype, acting “straight” then what is the point of having a gay character? Perhaps “Brokeback Mountain” carries it off as two gay characters. I haven’t seen the movie but my take is they are two homosexuals rather than two gays. The distinction is political. You could, for example, be a homosexual and serious conservative, but you could NOT be a conservative or serious “gay.” Gay is a lifestyle choice and derives from communist philosophy.

I start with the assumption all male actors (professional dancers, hair dressers, designers and Ice Skaters) are homosexuals. It makes life easier.

Recently I have noticed on reality shows (cooking network, talent shows) they have been pushing homosexuals. On the cooking shows at least one of the participant is a homosexual (and if I could not pick them out before hand, they always send love out to their “husband or partner”.

Homosexuals are living in their Golden Age. They have gained everything they thought they wanted but are too ignorant to understand that the powers behind the scene are just using them to undermine western society.

At some point their usefulness will end and they will be disposed of in the same manner the left has planned for conservatives. It will not be pretty.

As a conservative I don’t give a rat’s ass about homosexual life style but what does concern me is what the homosexual agenda is doing to our society.

While homosexuality has been tolerated to some degree or another over the span of human history there have been few times in world history where homosexuals seem to dominate the society they live in. For the most part homosexuals remained “in the closet” as this was a means of survival.

Their recent rise in the public arena like a rocket reaching for the sky, it is all wonderful and thrilling...until the rocket explodes, and there is nothing left but ashes.

(This is just an opinion, no more valid then yours)

Agree, which means Tom Cruise can stop his ranting, shut down filming of 'Mission Impossible 26: Rump Wrangler's Surprise,' and go home.
