The only problem is the short lifespans of dogs. If you live a long time your heart has been broken by losing a loving companion so many times that it is more like hamburger meat than a heart.

So true.
However, our animals love us so much that it would be a BIGGER tragedy for them to outlive us. My previous golden retrievers would have been totally LOST without me and it is hard to imagine anyone loving and spoiling them AS MUCH as I did. But losing them was the absolute HEARTBREAK of my life - worse than the loss of ANY past relationship.

I’m 78 and I’ve lost four over the last 50 years. Hurts like Hell every time, often worse than a human bereavement.

Amen. Have lost nine in my lifetime. It takes a sorrowfully long time to get over the loss. Holes in the heart take forever to heal.
