The movie industry and Hemingway obscured and hid the communist activity on the Republic side and made the commies into heroes. Franco was no saint, but he was the type of mean bastard they needed to save them from a lot worse.

Hollywood, in a movie with Jack Lemmon called, The Mission, did much the same to Pinochet that they did to Franco and for the same reason. Both of these men represented the right in a fight against communist brutality. Consider why Hitler is also regarded as a far worse villain than Stalin, even after one counts the bodies.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, Socialists the good guys.

The Angel wore Red. Socialists the bad guys.

Pan’s Labyrinth, Socialists the good guys.
