Ultraviolet radiation is a common method of killing bacteria and viruses. Now, researchers from Tel Aviv University have proven that the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, can be killed efficiently, quickly and cheaply using ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) at specific frequencies. “We discovered that it is quite simple to kill the coronavirus using LED bulbs that radiate ultraviolet light,” said Prof. Hadas Mamane, head of the Environmental Engineering Program at Tel Aviv University's School of Mechanical Engineering, who led the study with Prof. Yoram Gerchman and Dr. Michal Mandelboim.

When I was a kid in the 50’s a Merit Gas Station on the Berlin Turnpike(newington Ct) had a pay toilet (remember those) and the toilet seat flipped up ito a holder frame type thing that had a UV bulb in it.

I think they’ve known this since the 1960s. The way it was explained to me a decade ago...it’s not rocket science.
The shorter UV wavelengths that are so effective as disinfectants (UVC), are also the worst for human tissues, like the eyes and skin.
This is useful for disinfecting things and surfaces, but not safe for use when people are exposed to it.
The shorter the UV wavelength, the worse it is (for both people and viruses).
Too bad that we don’t have some source in the sky that emits UV rays huh?
For several decades, UV disinfection modules have been packaged for consumer use both freestanding for a room and a black box into central HVAC systems. UV light at an intensity sufficient for disinfection is hazardous so the devices have a cutoff switch to cut power if the device is opened. The consumer devices that use naked UV light are very low output intensity although it's dumb to look directly at them for any length of time.
One trick used with high end LEDs that have a narrow wavelength is to use lenses to focus the light to a narrow beam - Think about a laser pointer as an example. Another example used in specialized industrial and laboratory applications is to focus the LED output to a focal point a a fraction of a micron in diameter. This means that at that tiny focal point, the energy intensity is greater than 1 million watts per centimeter, all from a single common LED emitter.

This Scam-Demic is pissing me off.
You don’t get UV this time of year unless you are far to the south... that’s why we need to consume foods with Vitamin D and / or take supplements as exposure to the son doesn’t provide that now.
Moreover, for “killing” a virus, the UV light is not going into the bloodstream and internal organs by going outside and getting some sunshine.
Of course it does. This is not news nor a discovery.

I’ve installed 5 of these (Honeywell100E) throughout my restaurant on the return air side of the HVAC units.
I’ve also installed whole house style humidifiers (Aprilaire 600) on some of those

At the minimum this means you could hold classes outside in those parts of the country where the weather will be cooperative. Or, how about installing UV lights everywhere in the people work under UV light. That’s killing any coronavirus before I could drop for one person to the next?

Good note. They have known about UV ultra for a long time. But smaller droplets and particles from coughs and sneezes (formed when small droplets dry very quickly in the airstream) that can remain suspended for many minutes to hours and travel far from the source on air currents, are a constant threat in public.
So for all intents, we are surrounded by virus all the time as air passing in the most obvious way of contracting the virus. When you consider a dry virus particle landing on a wet mask from breath, it can get at you from almost anywhere. This is why the CDC has decided that masks are not as safe as previously advertised.
You can’t live in a world of UV. And you can’t treat the inner person with it after contracting the virus. So, good idea, and possibly good for cleaning/sterilzising in certain situations, but not practical or cost effective as a cure or control of the virus all the time.

Survivability is not the issue, it’s long-term injury. I have seen enough people injured by this that I don’t want it.
Yes plus it kills nasty stuff like mersa and staph in hospitals according to some articles. Hospitals in the Midwest were using portable uv machines to sterilize rooms i guess, but haven’t read a ythi g recently onthat, so not sure if they are still doing so
I added a purpose-specific UV light to my furnace return duct that lights the filter, too, plus an under-shelf unit where I unpack the groceries.

Question: What are the long term effects of UV LEDs exposure on your skin?
What about for disinfecting sterilizing foods? Would it be bad to do that for foods?
Car crashes are injury prone too, but we don’t lose our freedoms because accidents happen.

The UV light in my HVAC lasted 9 years. Tech said he would replace it for $135. I bought it on Amazon for $27 and installed it myself
On second thought, maybe UV can damage interior surfaces.
