ec 24 (Reuters) - Herd immunity against the novel coronavirus could require vaccination rates approaching as high as 90%, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the most prominent U.S. infectious disease expert, said in an interview published on Thursday.
More than 1 million Americans have received a first dose of a vaccine since Dec. 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, or only about 0.3% of the population.
Fauci, who is advising both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden on the pandemic, acknowledged that he had incrementally increased his estimates from earlier in the year, when he tended to say only 60% to 70% would need to be inoculated for herd immunity to be reached.
"We need to have some humility here," Fauci told the New York Times here. "We really don't know what the real number is. I think the real range is somewhere between 70 to 90 percent. But, I'm not going to say 90 percent."

The vaccine does not, as far as is known, prevent infection or transmission. This is undisputed and has been confirmed by the Surgeon General and head of Pfizer, among others. So planning on acquiring herd immunity through the ongoing vaccination is not scientific.
Fauci is the worst of the harlots. An actual scientist who has become seduced by power and celebrity. He is the epitome of power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
He should be run entirely out of the scientific community. A complete whore who draws on his credentials in order to spread falsehood.
Any public official making public pronouncements about the necessity of vaccines should be required to fully divulge their financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry!

Below is a link to an article that shows how to calculate herd immunity. It jives with a doctor I was listening to on YouTube. What he said made sense. A requirement for a herd immunity of 90% means that everyone in the society is interacting daily with every other member of the society. But that’s not what happens. As stated in the linked article, the requirement for herd immunity varies with the number and duration of social interactions an individual has. For some an immunity of 20% of the population is fine. For others it is 40%. So, we are basically needing to protect only the vulnerable, people who are older or who have co-morbidities.
