With movie theaters closed, the cutthroat competition for Christmas 2020 viewers is focused on streaming. Last year Netflix dominated the holidays at home with the big-budget, high-profile fantasy “The Witcher.” This time, the champ is back with a whole new type of fantasy series with an adaptation of the Regency romance series of novels known as “Bridgerton.”
........................................................
“Bridgerton” features none of these fig leaves. The series is the second Netflix title from Shonda Rhimes, best known for steamy ABC shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” Here, she unapologetically serves up joyous sentimentality and bodice-ripping sex in a faux-historical guise. This is an old-school “Regency romance,” where “Regency” is less a historical plot point and more an excuse to rip literal bodices.

Is it that explicit?
I don’t mind diversifying casting, the musical “Hamilton” works well. I’m not just not a fan of Shonda’s stuff.
I started watching Scandal the first season but stopped the first time some guy referred to some other guy as his “husband.”
I know what Shondra Rhimes is all about, and don’t need to bother with anything of hers ever again.
“impose modern sensibilities and obsessions on the period”
most of Hollywood and modern academia does that — making Shakespeare gay and all that.
I'm more a fan of the classics
I'll always wonder, though, how to sell pole dancing and twerking in period clothing. Don't the hoop skirts interfere?
tried watching it last night, absolute crap. I turned it off after 5 minutes, the un-needed sex scene and all the black servants and a lady in waiting told me where this would go. Downton worked because it was realistic, bridgerton just plain sucks.
I studiously avoid anything that Shonda Rimes is associated with.
my wife watched it in the den last night. I didn’t see much bodice ripping, but I only passed through a few times. Some unspectacular looking women in poofy dressed.
Must be a chick thing.
At first, when I heard they were doing a Regency series, I thought it might be interesting to watch. But then I saw the trailer for it, and said WTF?? No thanks.
I don't know her name, so I'm assuming I've never watched any of her crap. I'm a history nut, and can't stand watching anything that doesn't at least try to keep the show as historically accurate as possible. For that reason, I don't watch very many of them because most of them suck.
Too much eggnog?
Hey, so much historical info on display. All this time who knew Queen Charlotte was African-American? African-American dukes too. I must have missed school on those history days. 😂
The books are terrific.
If you’re a fan of historical romance, read the books and forget the woke SJW TV version.
I’m a chick.
I love the historical romance genre.
You know what I don’t like?
Woke crap. Soyboys. Mary Sues. SJW **** shoved down my throat. Sensitivity readers.
The Problem with Sensitivity Readers
They're croaking the book biz, too.
The author does not take into account that the intended audience is women, and feminist women do not regard it as any sort of serious offense when a woman attempts to become pregnant by a man who didn’t want to become a father.
It is utter trash.
Netflix is the new porn channel
And no wonder, with the trashy Obamas on the Board.
