---snip---

We have another great example that showcases how one innocent looking insecure IoT device connected to your network can cause security nightmares.

Nicole Eagan, the CEO of cybersecurity company Darktrace, told attendees at an event in London on Thursday how cybercriminals hacked an unnamed casino through its Internet-connected thermometer in an aquarium in the lobby of the casino.

According to what Eagan claimed, the hackers exploited a vulnerability in the thermostat to get a foothold in the network. Once there, they managed to access the high-roller database of gamblers and "then pulled it back across the network, out the thermostat, and up to the cloud."

Although Eagan did not disclose the identity of the casino, the incident she was sharing could be of last year, when Darktrace published a report [PDF], referencing to a thermometer hack of this sort on an unnamed casino based in North America.

Just ignore her politely. I used to have some friends who scoffed at me for being careful about passwords. That was before major hacking and virus attack make headlines in earnest. Same thing is happening now.

People only see the upside of using connected devices now. Will stay that way until their own devices are hacked and they are left powerless.

That’s what they get for not partitioning their network...
What part off fish@casino.com v. highrollers@casino.com do they not understand? Even in my stupidly small business which has no important data to reveal to anyone I layer access. Jeez.

It is not money. Personal info of high-rollers at the casino. 10 GB of data is said to be illegally transferred.

yup! It has analyzed my daily driving habits! Or; more likely; it is in cahoots with my Uconnect® system in my new Jeep! How else would my phone know I had just gotten into the Jeep? (The car DOES send a message to my phone as to where I've parked it at the Mega Mall!)

The Sceptre’s have a VGA input.

Why pay MORE for a computer ‘monitor’ the same size, that doesn’t have TV functions; too?

Non-smart ones would be contraband on that date; if Joe gets in.

Cash-for-Clunkers was just a prelude.

“Turn-in-a-TV” will be the NEXT big thing; especially if it’s your NEIGHBORS!!

Yup.

This is EXACTLY the kind of 'story' that I would tell; to a bunch of nervous folks wanting to secure THEIR data from attack!
