I have elderly parents in New York who rarely get to see their grandson. I'm totally OK with getting tested before travel, to make sure we don't bring COVID home. But I don't get New York's travel restrictions... we have to quarrantine for 4 days after arrival? Well, there goes Christmas. I've tried to get more information about this from the state, but I get the sense they WANT everyone to feel defeated and stay home. And how do I demonstrate I've complied? Can they really do anything to me if I can't demonstrate I've quarrantined for 4 days AFTER arriving in New York? (Of course, the whole thing is stupid because New York has a sky-high rate... it's my HOME state which should be afraid of me traveling THERE, but since my parents are elderly, I am more concerned about them.
I do it all the time.
I also have a Faraday bag which I use if I’m driving our clunker.
Well, Chappaqua is the town where the Clintons chose to live when they left the White House. They needed to make a residence in New York so that Hillary could become a senator. Maybe things aren’t quite so tight everywhere else.
Really? Do you carry one but leave it off? Or maybe in airplane mode? Because I haven’t seen pay phones for emergencies in a long long time.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe that this is still the United States of America, once known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. Sad
This is very disturbing. Cities and states across the nation would not call out the National Guard to quell the riots during the summer but now New York has the national guard at airports to see if people are violating coronavirus so-called laws.
I have two perfectly good legs. And other forms of communication.
I guess I didn’t realize what a Faraday bag was. How awful that we have to consider having these.
If it makes you feel any better, they are terrified of us. They wouldn’t be working so hard to cow us if they weren’t.
I’m married to a one man Geek Squad otherwise I’d be SOL.
Don’t mind the maggots.
Yes he can travel to New York. It’s not a hard question.
Long Island. Which went red big time for Trump, btw!
Before your post I had only heard of Faraday bags, but had never looked into them. So I’m trying to understand when it would be safe to pull your device out of the bag. Because doing so means that *somebody* would be able to see/find/track your phone, tablet, or laptop, right? You can eventually be found as soon as you remove it from the protection of the bag. So is it something to use just when on the road?
Enjoy your trip.
Be sure and stop at Zorn’s, for some turkey dinners to go.
Are they still open (w/Covid crap)???
I wish they shipped, nationwide.
I live in the northeast and haven’t stopped going where I please since all this stupidity began, including driving to New Hampshire last week. The roads are clear and we had no problems anywhere along the route, including stopping at restaurants and getting gas. Finding open rest-stops was a challenge, but if you’re ok using a Chick-Fil-A bathroom, you’ll be fine. Hotels are being forced to obey rules about quarantining people from out of state, but if you have a place to stay overnight, you should be fine.
I think you meant your post for the OP.
I’m in TX and NOT traveling to the NE, or anywhere, for Christmas :-)
My vote is to go see your parents. My kids think we’re old and fragile because we both turned 60 this year. I have no comorbidities and neither does my husband, though I think we could both stand to lose 5-10 pounds. Our kids might mean well, but their overly concerned stance is unwarranted, in my opinion.
Our daughter suggested that all of us get tested for CoVid a week ago, and then quarantine after testing so to protect everyone. Mind you, I have no symptoms, take prophylaxis every day to protect myself as best as I can. I only go to the grocery store every 3-5 days to get new fresh produce. I am doing way more shopping online for other goods, so I’m staying out of the usual retail stores I would visit during Christmas. I don’t linger in stores. Usually I’m inside for 10-15 minutes, and occasionally up to 45 minutes.
So I don’t think I’m at much risk. I live in a small midwestern town with 10,000 people. The town next to us is maybe 3x that many people, but I don’t go there often.
I don’t care if my daughter wants to get a test before she comes, but her insistence that we get CoVid tests and then quarantine when we are perfectly healthy is off-putting to me. It tells me that CoVid will be a nearly constant topic of discussion during her visit. Her insistence has made us very uncomfortable.
How many times do guests come to visit, but they make the rules for the visit? I love my daughter, but I can’t play that game. We told her that maybe it would be better to wait until next year when hopefully this nonsense won’t be first and foremost on everyone’s mind.
FWIW, we recently saw my 92 year old MIL for Thanksgiving. My husband acquiesced on getting a test before we went because he had been traveling the week before, and well, his mom is 92. She lives by herself and is so lonely on the days when her caregiver doesn’t come, which is 3 days a week. We had a beautiful, wonderful visit! If my husband didn’t have to get back to work on Monday, we would’ve stayed longer.
Go see your parents. I am heartbroken that my daughter is trying to protect me to the nth degree. At some point, you just have to live your life. I am living mine. I guess she is living hers too.
I’m ready to go back to the old normal. No masks. If you’re sick, stay home. Wash your hands. Cough or sneeze into your shoulder or elbow. Don’t touch your face. Handshakes are fine, and so are hugs and smiles! That’s what I want. Old normal.
I sneezed into my shoulder last month and now have a torn rotator cuff! You just can’t win.
Can you travel? Absolutely.
They can say you should do x, y or z if you do, but the can’t enforce it.
They cannot restrict your right to travel, no matter what they claim.
This is a disease, you could get it, and nothing is going to stop you from getting it... no mask, no lockdown... you will be exposed to it sooner or later.
So, you can get it, nothing you can do will stop that.. you could die from it (though odds are pretty good you won’t)... So you can spend what may be your final days walking this earth cowering in the corner, isolated and alone.
Or spend them living your life!
Personally I choose the latter.
