If it was just the paint I'd definitely suspect a hoax, but burning the cars is a little much for a hoax, unless they wanted insurance to buy them new ones.

I'm 50/50 on this one, waiting for the investigation.

Likewise torching the cars over a yard sign is a little much. It is not believable.
