I was, but you had to be in 3 years to even reach E4 (SrAmn)... then start the NCO training.

was Buck Sgt or Buck private ever a “real” Rank?

In the Army, if I remember correctly sometimes an E-2 was called a Buck Private (mosquito wings) and a Buck Sgt was a 3 stripe E-5...but Id never heard of it as "official"
