NFL Ratings Drop Leaves Networks Scrambling to Make Advertisers Whole
WSJ ^ | 12/12/20

A pro football game on a Wednesday afternoon is rare. Advertisers getting a pricing discount for NFL games is also usually unheard of.

But it’s happening.

TV networks are feeling the strains of disappointing NFL ratings, as they are forced to restructure deals with advertisers to make up for the smaller audience, and their opportunity to make money off remaining games during the lucrative holiday season narrows.

NBC made the unusual move of lowering the price it charged advertisers that already had committed to run in a Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game planned for Thanksgiving night after a Covid-19 outbreak on the Ravens forced the game’s postponement to the following Wednesday.

Much of the ratings drop is attributed to the 2020 presidential election coverage siphoning away viewers

BS. There was no such ratings drop in 2016, 2012, 2008... This is unique - caused entirely by the decision of the NFL to embrace left-wing radicalism. They've driven away viewers and many of those viewers will never return.

Personally, I've followed the NFL and the 49ers since I was in the third grade. I've never been less interested in the NFL than I have been this season. Every Sunday, whenever I think of turning on a game, I think about the league-wide pandering to BLM and the left and...nah.

If the NFL is lowering the price, it's only because they've already exhausted the amount of additional advertising time they offer when they're not hitting their numbers.

For example, if the advertiser ran 4 ads against a show with 10M viewers but only 8M tuned in, the broadcaster would run the ad 5 times instead. (Viewers tolerance for commercials be damned).

Instead the NFL can't jam any more ads in because the viewer counts are too low for the advertiser to agree to running the ad 15 times.

There was a time I wanted the sports leagues to wake up, now I just want them dead. Hope they stay delusional and dig their grave. I’m guessing when it finally results in less money for players, they’ll react with a strike. It’s what a bunch of idiots would do, then the collapse should really accelerate.

Won’t be long before players feel the pinch from declining revenue sharing. Awesome!

Since the NFL is allowing their players to protest my country and my service, I will not watch, PERIOD.

I'm at a point in life where I can afford a Range Rover

A fella in town is driving around in his brand spankley new Defender. Definitely worth taking a look.

“Aren’t most of the players contracts tied to things like this?”

I think most players contracts are guaranteed money if the player is available and/or maintains certain stats such as QB’s passing pctg, running backs yards per carry, etc.

What WILL be affected is the next contract negotiations between the NFL and the broadcasters.
Unfortunately the NFL had gotten spoiled by an ever increasing demand for their product which meant an ever increasing price they could charge advertisers. That led to more money for the teams to lavish on their pampered millionaire players.

Also unfortunately this is the first downturn in viewership the NFL has ever experienced. Unlike the NBA and MLB which have both survived up and down popularity the NFL has only experienced positive growth since the 1950’s.
Going to be interesting watching them scramble around plugging the holes in their sinking ship. If they understand at all that they’re in trouble.

This years Super Bowl will complete this ratings disaster.

The word is already out that ... “this year’s Super Bowl ads will prominently feature social and racial justice issues, along with Covid-19 messages, according to a sports business trade report.”

I know we’ll find something else to do that suffering through one sermon on racial equality after another. One wonders if Colin Kaepernick will be a guest announcer?

What is this NBA you speak of?

A professional league actually plays scheduled games instead of getting too geklempt about a homey getting shot (and living) to do your job...

I can understand ONE player who was related to or family of the dude that got shot. An entire slate of scheduled games? For several days? That does not happen in a professional league. NCAA hoop is getting the side eye at this point (give me a reason, @$$#@+$), but there is no professional basketball league in the US. Some babies getting paid to play, but no professionals that I have sen lately.

And the ads are more propaganda to give you the idea the country is 75% black and the rest gay.

The next round of TV Contract negotiations is going on as we speak, as is the re-doing of the labor agreement with the NFLPA.

Reality will be setting in quickly — the salary cap will be adjusted DOWN this year for the first time since it was instituted in the early 90’s...

Hopefully it devastates the salary structure of every team in the NFL. Can you imagine a team telling one of their marquee thugs “sorry, there’s no money for a raise in your new contract.” Of course they won’t make the connection between their actions and the lower ratings numbers.
