South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said he thought Paul — who has provoked government shutdowns before — was using the time-crunch for maximum leverage to remove the provision on troop withdrawals.
“I think he’s just trying to figure out ways to derail the bill. And … when you’re in the U.S Senate that’s your prerogative. But most of our people would like to get it done" this week, Thune said.
“His thing is just to delay this and use all the time so it pushes the vote on (the defense bill) into next week, which pushes the override vote” on a possible Trump veto into the following week, Thune said of his fellow Republican, Paul.

HA!
Ping!
If people like Rand can delay passage til after noon, Dec 23, I believe Trump can ‘Pocket Veto’ the bill, and his veto can’t be overturned. The new congress would have to take up the bill all over again - less time for congress to pull all kinds of other crap - and the Rats will have less votes in the House.

Mot following, please explain.
There’s not enough time left in this Congress for them to vote to overide the veto. “Pocket veto, the killing of legislation by a chief executive through a failure to act within a specified period following the adjournment of the legislature. In the United States, if a bill sent to the president is not signed within 10 days and Congress has adjourned during that period, the bill is pocket vetoed.”
11th VA says if Rand can delay passage of this bill beyond a certain date and if Trump veto’s it they can’t override even if they have the numbers.
The new Congress will have to take it up.
I’m no expert on this...
If I have to choose who I trust between rand paul and Thune, it’s Paul all day long.
Now, he will.
There will be no "pocket veto."
Sen. McConnell throws his support behind NDAA, urges Senate to pass it
The Senate needs 67 votes for a veto proof majority. The initial bill passed with a vote in the 80s.
Paul is delaying the bill for valid reasons. He needs to delay it until Monday so Trump can veto it on 23 December and either force Congress to return and override the veto after Christmas or it becomes a pocket veto and the next Congress has to take it up. Can Paul procedurally delay it until Monday? I actually agree with Paul's reasoning over Trump's. However renaming military bases named after Confederate Generals is stupid and should be removed.
Also, the article is bullshit. DOD is building with money allocated years ago. The money in the bill is for new construction some of which has not even been bid on yet or cost overruns, it will not delay construction. It will not hurt troops they will deploy, get paid and report for duty whether this bill is signed or not. Manufacturers of weapon systems will not stop working and weapons systems will be shipped on time. Some nonessential civilians will get an extended Christmas break. Pay raise does not go into effect until January at the earliest anyway, but they will not see it until Feb or March. So veto the damn thing and use the time he has to bring our people home. Cheney's daddy killed a lot of our sons and daughters for no damn good reason. Lost all respect for him and Bush. Obama's ROE also caused a lot of casualties so bring our people home before Obama (real President) and Biden change the rules again and kill more of our troops.
Very good explanation of this..first time i understand this.
Thanks for taking the time to lay this all out this is what is wonderful about Free Republic
Trust the plan ...
I believe at some point, he can make them read the entire bill
All McConnell has to do is not formally recess. He did the exact same thing last year so that Trump could not make recess appointments. The Senate can opt to not officially adjourn.
If vetoed and no CR is passed, the troops do get paid regular pay, but not special pay and bonuses (hazardous, reenlistment bonuses, flight pay, etc.) The troops also won't get a pay raise.
Hundreds of thousands of DoD employees (logistics, maintenance, cyberwarfare, communications) will be furloughed. It's easy to laugh and say "non-essential", but DoD leadership puts a cap on how many can continue to work and be paid. Massive amounts of capability are crippled during shutdowns and furloughs, despite the rhetoric.
Congress is never going to include the Big Tech provision in the NDAA this go-around.
Trump has bigger things to worry about - like saving the Constitution and the Republic and stopping the theft of the election.
This fight is pissing in a hurricane.
This vote is shaping to be one last middle finger from the swamp to POTUS and his 70+ million voters. They are teaching us a lesson here. We need to be good students and learn from it.
U.S. Senate advances massive defense bill, despite Trump veto threat
The U.S. Senate threw its weight behind the annual National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, a $740 billion bill setting policy for the Department of Defense, voting by a large margin to advance the bill on Friday despite President Donald Trump’s veto threat. The tally was 84 to 13 - well over the 60 needed to proceed - on the procedural motion to end debate and clear the way for a final vote on the measure, now set for Friday afternoon.
I was furloughed under Obama. Those who were deemed essential were pissed off, they had to come to work every day. I got a a bit more then a weeks vacation and as soon as the Bill was signed, Obama gave us back pay for being furloughed. It happens every time.
“Congress is never going to include the Big Tech provision in the NDAA this go-around.”
PDJT Trump knows that, he wanted to force them into a corner and get a concessions it did not work. However, Trump mentioned recently that the NDAA is bad because it would prevent other Commander in Chiefs from doing their job. He is right. Germany and other NATO countries paid up because they felt Trump was just crazy enough to pull out troops or move them to friendlier countries like Poland. God forbid Germany had to actually train a military to defend itself. Now that is off the table because NATO can lobby Congress to prevent the CiC from doing his job, Hell he will not even be able to negotiate now, Congress pulled his power to do that. He has nothing more important to do than protecting our troops in harms way. There is no damn good reason for another Soldier or Marine to die in shitholes like Syria and Afghanistan. That certainly takes priority over some GS-12 not getting paid for a couple of weeks. What are their lives worth?
