Cars guitarist Ric Ocasek wrote this song, but their bass player Benjamin Orr sang lead.

Yup. Orr and Ocasek are 2nd gen American Czech and they were tight, even when Orr left the band. Drive, for the first 15 years I didnt get into because it was too slow. Only when Orr died, I thought it was a great song. Ocasek said that he “didnt have talent” enough to sing on Drive and gave credit to Orr and said Orr was a far superior singer than he was.
Both Orr and Ocasek were lead singers.
Sometimes Orr was, but more sometimes, Ocasek.
Ooops. How could I have omitted the B-52’s?!!
The title track was my favorite song but everything from the covert art to the music was nearly flawless
And then came “Moving In Stereo”, and to every red-blooded American male in the 80s that meant one thing....PHOEBE!
The Cars, The Police, Blondie, Talking Heads, B-52s, and a few others that were pivotal
The late 70s new wave that launched the massive number of great 80s bands -
Tears for Fears, Thompson Twins, Thomas Dolby, Echo and the Bunnymen, The The, XTC, The Human League, Duran Duran, Orchestral Movements in the Dark, New Order, The Clash, The Smiths, ELO, Simple Minds, Blanc Mange, and more
And.. THE CRAMPS!
Listen to Fountains of Wayne “Stacys Mom” - they use the cars riff from just what i needed
My favorite Cars album, only flawed by that "Shoo Be Doo" track preceding the title track. Fortunately it's only 96 seconds long.
"It's All I Can Do" is my favorite Cars track of all time. Reminds me of the smell of fried clams and driving along the beach with the windows open on a hot summer night.
Yeah
The Kinks too
I liked some smaller bands too, Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, Mighty Lemon Drops, Chaz Jankel, Julian Cope, and I forgot about Book Of Love
One of my best friends from high school was a splitting image of Greg Hawkes. Yes, I hung out with mostly nerds. Which kept me out of trouble.
This is a early photo from 1977 of Ric Ocasek and Greg Hawkes during an appearance in the WBCN-FM studio.
I loved all those bands plus The Specials, English Beat, REM and Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
I love Benjamin Orr singing “Candy-O.”
Funny, I heard Candy-O on SiriusXM while I was out and about this afternoon. Almost forgot about that song. Very cool indeed.
I had dinner with this guy years ago. He is very thin and he was wearing very tight leather pants. I wasn’t into the music scene at the time and had only a vague idea that he was a big deal.
Great song, great band!

And, he was a surprisingly good hockey player. No, wait...
Paulina Poroskova being the stunning, crazy lady in “Drive” takes on a touch more meaning knowing that. (Yes, I know she married Ocasek. I guess that answered that question, Benny!)
and the reason why she married Ocasek is because she has a thing for weird looking guys AND guys were scared of asking her out! In an interview years ago, she developed an inferiority complex and thought she was “uglY’ because guys would just stare at her, and not make a move.
