Newsmax’s plan to dethrone Fox News: Build a streaming empire

You wouldn’t know it by looking at cable TV ratings, but Fox News has a big problem on its hands.

While the conservative news giant enjoyed record Nielsen ratings in November thanks to the presidential election, its dominance is now being tested by Newsmax, a scrappier competitor that’s had fewer reservations about questioning Joe Biden’s victory. That stance has earned the channel praise from Donald Trump, rumors of an acquisition or investment by Trump allies, and a flurry of stories examining Newsmax’s ascent in the TV news pecking order.

Most of those stories point out that Newsmax is still well behind Fox News’s Nielsen ratings. What they miss, however, is that Newsmax doesn’t need more cable viewership to dethrone its rival. While Fox News’s ratings surge occurred entirely within the confines of pay TV bundles, Newsmax has millions of people tuning into its free online live streams, which don’t require a cable package. While questions remain over Newsmax’s ability to make money and to retain viewers without pumping out baseless election fraud claims, its continued existence could pose an existential threat to Fox News in the age of cord cutting.

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy says that’s the story everyone’s sleeping on. When you factor in Newsmax’s streaming audience, the race between the two right-wing news networks is closer than you might think.

“Why would you subscribe to Fox when you can get Newsmax for free?” Ruddy says in an interview. “We now have a Fox lookalike—maybe we’re arguably better than Fox in some ways—and [viewers] don’t have to pay $1,500 a year for the damned cable box.”

Newsmax has a huge problem as well. A lot of their off-hours just have filler; they need real news shows in there.

They also need to enlarge their news topic and guest coverage ....not sure how they’ll do with a ground crew when events happen.

Chris Ruddy has a window of opportunity that may never come again. If he plays it right his channel could become even bigger than what Fox used to be.

I no longer watch FOX News, I switch between Newsmax, Americas Voice, OAN and one other I can’t think of?

They have another huge problem. Despite several emails asking for assistance, they have continuously messed up sending me the necessary verification email so I can read/post comments. Usually, it has ended up in my virus folder and no way would I open something from there. I just delete those.

That will come in time, as their revenues improve. You need the revenues before you can put out the high quality shows that a viewer might want.

Really. Marilyn, Elvis, JFK, and Hitler are old news.

No fan of Fox as I stopped watching years ago, but Ruddy is suspect as well (Clinton Foundation donor). I think OANN, America's Voice, maybe the Blaze (if it isn't about GB), and there are one or two others out there that deserve just as much support as Newsmax.

Odd, because Sky News UK is the king of fake news.
