Intelligent life 'extremely rare', study claims

The question of whether we are alone in the universe remains one of the biggest philosophical conundrums of our time. While it seems almost inconceivable that our civilization is alone in the cosmos, the fact still remains that we have yet to see any evidence to the contrary.

Now a new study by researchers from Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute has cast further doubt on the likelihood that we will ever come into contact with intelligent extraterrestrials by determining that such civilizations are 'exceptionally rare' in the universe.

The basis for this, the scientists argue, is that intelligent life on Earth required multiple 'revolutionary transitions' over billions of years, and that the odds of this happening on other worlds are very slim.

“...intelligent life is pretty rare even on our own species of 6 billion human beings.”

Indeed. Had we only our media as examples, it’s obviously not very likely even among humans.

Since we can’t communicate with the other societiies on earth we can be certain that we will probably not be able to communicate with aliens from space

The societies we know of and even cooperate with are honey bees. Honey bees are in effect human slaves that cooperate readily. We know they have language with which they communicate with each other and we understand it partially.

We can’t communicate with the thousands of ant and termite societies however.

Rarity is dependent upon the perceiver’s scope.

Read “The Three Body Problem” and you get the idea that civilizations are actively hiding their ‘signature’.

The conditions for "life" are MUCH different than those for "intelligent life".

Life can form, but what causes it to advance beyond a primordial sludge? Without the Moon it's very unlikely that intelligent life would have evolved here. The rotation of the Earth would be much greater. We would not have seasons. And most importantly we would not have the 1.5x iron mass core producing the magnetic field protecting us from solar radiation. In simple terms, we would not be here without the moon.

The Moon was formed when an object the size of Mars collided with the Earth. What exactly is the odds of two planet size objects collide during the formation of a system? And, the collision results in the planet having 50% more iron in its core and a moon with enough mass to slow the rotation of its host?

The odds of the Earth/Moon system forming are billions if not trillions to one. And without that form of relationship it's unlikely for the planet to form intelligent life.

The odds of it happening on this world are very slim as well.

Intelligent life ‘extremely rare’, study claims.

Must have been studying Democrats.

I think that this conclusion is correct. You just have to turn on your TV to see that there is precious little intelligent life on this planet.

Unless and until we either find life somewhere else or figure out how to make a living organism from scratch in a test tube we have no idea how common or rare life is in the universe, let alone intelligent life.

It could that microbial life evolves eventually wherever there is water, heat and organic molecules. Or it could be that making the leap from complex organic molecules to the simplest living organism took so many trillions of occurrences in the exact right order that Earth is the only place in the universe where it has ever happened.

The question is no different if you believe that the universe and all life was created by a Supreme Being. It could be that God chose to make life common in the universe or it could be that God chose to create life only on Earth.

Either way, at this point all anyone can do is guess.

Please factor in the following in your deliberation: entropy, quantum “foam”, virtual particles, Casimir effect, dark energy, dark matter, time, randomness, multiverse, weak or strong anthropic principle, mass of a photon(pre movement), branes, probability calculations, and Schrodingers cat, with a dash of Heisenberg. And are we living in a simulation?

Intelligent life is extremely rare . . .

I agree. However, sometimes I wonder whether it is true even in outer space!

There is no way to come to this conclusion at this time. There is no evidence either way, for ET life, or against ET life. We don’t know.
