“... but achieving fusion is both extremely difficult and prohibitively expensive.”
A very expensive hobby for some state employees. They have reached the same point, exponentially more expensive, than the infamous “E-Cat” featured on this venue a few years ago.

these guys can’t control a case of bird flu, much less a Level 4 lab, and now they’re messing with nuclear power?

according to the article, it’s a cooperative venture with France and ‘35 countries’ and was started in 2006.
Was this a result of those countries going, ‘we can’t build it here because of environmental concerns, let’s build it in China’? And are other projects like this the reason the EU is so reluctant to take a hard line with China?
I’m sure India will be pleased. /s

For reactors in China the press uses “Made to replicate the natural reactions of the sun....”
For reactors in the USA: “Uses a similar design as the bombs dropped on Japan that killed over 200,000 people.”

If they could make it last longer than tiny fractions of a second, they’d be crowing about it. If they could achieve net energy output, they’d be crowing about it. That being said, the US should not fall behind whomever the Chinese stole this technology from. No, that would be forbidden in the West by Climate Change alarmists (heat is bad!) but who vote for pro--China Democrats.

The HL-2M Tokamak uses a powerful magnetic field to fuse hot plasma and can reach temperatures of over 150 million degrees Celsius, approximately ten times hotter than the core of the Sun. Global warming on steroids.
