It’s official. Murphy approves toll hikes on three major N.J. highways

It’s a done deal. Tolls on the states three major toll highways are going up in September, after Gov. Phil Murphy gave a final approval of the increases and the multi-billion dollar construction plans they fund.

Murphy signed the meeting minutes on May 27 and sent confirmation letters to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and South Jersey Transportation Authority, said Jerrel Harvey, a spokesman for the governor. The approvals came on the same day boards of both agencies met, held lengthy public hearings and approved the toll increases.

Governors have the option to approve authority board minutes, or not to sign them and veto the actions on all or specific items. The toll increase takes effect on Sept. 13 on all three toll roads.

Various environmental groups and individual drivers had urged the governor to veto the minutes, objecting to plans to widen 16 sections of the Turnpike and Parkway and one part of the Atlantic City Expressway. They said the widenings were too costly and damaging to the environment and neighbors of North Jersey cities the widening would go through. They also said post coronavirus traffic levels may not warrant highway widenings.

Construction and labor groups urged approval and signing, and echoed reasons given by Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti that the road work will be an economic stimulus in the post COVID-19 era.

NJ, the reason why people from PA still feel somewhat free.

As an aside, I assume your Secretary of Health didn’t remove his penis. So NJ does have that...

SMART MOVE - slam the people when they’re not driving (due to the virus) and are much less likely to notice when they start driving again.

Anyway...they voted for it!!!

I thought they had sold their toll roads sometime in the past. I guess I am incorrect about that.

Better be careful digging up the sides of roadways in and out of Atlantic City and Hudson County NJ. Never know when one of the ex Goodfellows will pop up.

It wasn’t long ago that the PDRNJ (People’s Democratic Republic of New Jersey) had one of the lowest gas tax rates in the US, and Trannys-sylvania had the highest.

Just another reason this hombre is moving south within the next year and a half. I was thinking about Florida. Any Freepers have suggestions for specific towns, I'm all ears. I have to be on a coast, probably prefer the gulf coast.

I don’t feel free in PA. All I see is NY and NJ plates. They are taking over especially in Luzerne and Lackawanna.

The Viewmont mall in Dickson City you would swear you were in NY. It’s like an invasion. Here in Hazleton I have to get to the grocery store before noon on Fridays because they all come up and take over. It’s so annoying. You should have seen the fall season. Don’t they have trees?

This is great news. This means the bridges will be rebuilt solid and the roads paved with gold and no potholes to boot!

When I have to go that way I drive 295 as far as I can to bypass the turnpike. Even though I drive a company car I still bypass toll roads when possible.

In that case, you might as well avoid Tampa-St. Pete. That area has at least two toll roads.

How is the Sarasota area as a place to live?
