For anyone who doesn’t know, ONE light-year, the DISTANCE light travels in a year, at its basically constant speed of 186,000 miles per SECOND, is roughly 6 TRILLION miles! (5.9 trillion)
That said...
“NGC 6822 is a mere 1.5 million light-years away, a member of our Local Group of galaxies. A dwarf irregular galaxy similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud, NGC 6822 is about 7,000 light-years across.”
Thanks for the explanation! Those distances are almost incomprehensible to me.
Can’t help wondering what kind of life might exist in other galaxies. Maybe I’ve seen one too many reruns of the original Star Trek. Sort of took a shine as a kid to the lady with the green skin. :-)
7,000 light years across is small. The Milky Way is estimated to be about 100,000 light years across and Andromeda is about 200,000 light years across.
The article does not point out that Barnard's Star is not in Barnard's Galaxy.
