I figure that 20% of the Republican base was conservatives voting for "the lesser of two evils".

That's going to leave a mark when we either 1) sit out the election or 2) really put the bayonet ALL THE WAY IN by voting Democrat in previously safe red areas, so we can focus on the REAL target without the back-stabbing jobsworth GOPee chaff in the way.
