It is a thought.
McConnell does not have direct access to a trump path to re-election until after the election is thrown to the House but the House is not able to (or not allowed to, by Pelosi) to declare a winner.
At that juncture in the hypothetical future, McConnell can either hold a vote, or table a vote. If he tables a vote, then Pelosi becomes acting President by default— and the Republican Party is effectively destroyed forever as a viable formal political entity. Is that the prize apple that Haspel was seeking?
Side observation, if it goes to a national House or Senate vote, then if the Republicans break ranks, it will be the end of the Republican Party and a new party will be constituted (setting aside the outside possibility of a CWII if a new party is blocked from being formed).
I think everyone is getting a little dramatic about what is going to happen.
Usually the simplest answer is the one that’s likely to happen.
