SPACEX MARS CITY: WERNER HERZOG ISSUES A STARK WARNING TO ELON MUSK
Inverse ^ | 20 Nov 2020 | Mike Brown

Posted on 11/20/2020 8:11:24 PM PST by DUMBGRUNT

But famed film director Herzog tells Inverse there is a massive flaw in the latter half of Musk's plan.

In a blistering criticism, Herzog describes the idea as "an obscenity," and says humans should "not be like the locusts."

In the interview, conducted earlier this month prior to the release of a new documentary on asteroids, Herzog also compares Musk's plan to the rise and collapse of communism and fascism in the 20th century. The 21st century will "quickly" end the "technological utopia like colonizing Mars," he says.

Herzog’s point is that techno optimism often has a delusional, cult-like quality that leads to grave errors and abuses. Ultimately, settlement on Mars requires not just technological capability but also economic viability and a better standard of living for the participants. If not, settlement on Mars will fail.

If he dies, he dies. If he thrives he thrives. Same with those who want to go with him.

What I think will really happen is that the first few missions will be catastrophic--as in everybody dies.

But--some lessons just have to learned the hard way.

After the disasters, folks will get real about the technological barriers that need to be addressed.

That is a lot of water. Wonder how it got there.
There’s an old theory that Mars once had an atmosphere, but was of insufficient size for its gravity to hold it. Over millions of years it leaked out into space - only a trace is left. All liquid water was lost too, unless it was underground or permanently frozen. Some of my favorite science fiction is about ancient Mars civilizations, once vital but now dead or dying.

- -

The Martians, wanted to save their planet from global warming by reducing CO2. They succeeded wildly. CO2 levels dropped to the point where all plant life was extinguished which extinguished the production of oxygen. Without new CO2 production and no plants to make it, the remaining atmosphere slowly was scrubbed away by the solar winds.

Same with the Forty-Niners. We’ll figure it out. Just don’t let Californication occur or they will have a catastrophe.

Herzog isn’t in the same intellectual solar system as Elon Musk. Or it”s asteroid belt.

Elon revolutionized space travel with reusable rockets. He’s a visionary, And if you pay attention, he thinks like us.

Herzog works in Hollywood with other blue-pill psychos.

Mars is a harsh mistress.

***************

Oh, she’s not that bad.

Just don’t do the ball-gag.

That makes using the safe word kinda problematic.

Uh, his cars are knocking it out of the park, too.

I would bet that if 100% of freepers drove a Model S, 50% would buy one.

I was not impressed, till I drove one.

Still won’t buy a S. Maybe a 3 in a few years on a replacement schedule, or the truck (that will get redesigned, it won’t be the abomination that is currently the Cyber Truck).

The S is too hot for my testosterone injected mind. I’d be the next nut up in a tree, with lithium ion cells raining from the sky.

“Herzog describes the idea as “an obscenity,” and says humans should “not be like the locusts.” “

What a moronic comment - locusts destroy, humans create and build. He probably thinks that it would be a wonderful thing if humans went extinct.

Maybe he can start by offing himself.

THIS POS IS WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!

We SHOULD colonize and reach out into the STARS!!!

We are the only lifeforms we know that dares ask “WHY ARE WE HERE”

We owe it to ourselves and the universe to expand AT LEAST until we run into others who as questions LIKE WE DO!!!

An intersting supposition from screen name Alas Babylon!

Are you referring to "Alas Babylon" being the code word for nuclear war from the novel by the same name?

Or the verse from The Bible,
Revelation 18:10   Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city!   for in one hour is thy judgment come.

WERNER HERZOG needs to real all of the Foundation series. The Trilogy and then all of the later sequels, persequels and the extensions to other related series.   Herr Herzog's brain would pop open like a chestnut roasting on Christmas Eve.

I get the joke, but actually there was a major disruption in the solar system resulting in one side of Mars being heavily bombarded and blowing off the atmosphere - prior to that event, the Martians fled to Earth. So returning is no big deal for Mars, just for the erstwhile explorers and colonists.
