But famed film director Herzog tells Inverse there is a massive flaw in the latter half of Musk's plan.
In a blistering criticism, Herzog describes the idea as "an obscenity," and says humans should "not be like the locusts."
In the interview, conducted earlier this month prior to the release of a new documentary on asteroids, Herzog also compares Musk's plan to the rise and collapse of communism and fascism in the 20th century. The 21st century will "quickly" end the "technological utopia like colonizing Mars," he says.

Just hope nobody lands a rocket on Uranus
Could be especially uncomfortable if Uranus has asteroids.
Me too!
That would be painful.
I think Elon Musk should do as he pleases. It’s his money.
If he dies, he dies. If he thrives he thrives. Same with those who want to go with him.
Lot’s of people died when they left Europe to come here. But some survived and thrived, and here we are.
Don’t listen to the stay at home Europeeing boys.
“Could be especially uncomfortable if Uranus has asteroids”
Don’t forget the Klingons, more problems.
I’m guessing Musk is not overly interested in the opinions of movie makers.
LOL
Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids.
That was a good post.
I like Elon. He’s eccentric but many geniuses were.
And he called out the silliness of lockdowns.
Can’t be all bad
“If he thrives he thrives. Same with those who want to go with him.”
An intersting supposition from screen name Alas Babylon!
And how long before the Four Hoursemen get to work in the new frontier?
Mars is a harsh mistress.
I know, I know, it’s really the moon, but what the heck.
Shut up and eat your shoe, Werner.
Werner did the movie Grizzly Man. Really a great documentary. It is a tragic story but I found parts of it funny anyway. It is the real people in the story like his ex girlfriend and the local coroner, etc. You have to see it to understand. Someone did a little satire video several years ago that I saw on YouTube. I still consider it the funniest video I have ever seen on the internet.
The same theory says Earth once had more atmosphere than it does now. It leaks away too, but with our higher gravity less of it escapes. In the end, Earth will be barren too, just like Mars (so they say).
Herzog has a point - Mars will never be habitable on its surface - but neither will the Moon.
Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids.
Yes.
But better than some parts along South Cottage.
And I used to work at 56 & Cottage.
A very interesting carpool to the NW suburbs, with my goofy partners ‘shortcuts’.
But some very good rib joints along the way, watermelons in the summer.
‘In the end, Earth will be barren too, just like Mars (so they say).”

First of all, why do we care what a film maker has to say about a billionaire who is actually running a space program that has figured out how to land rocket stages for reuse? (I’m not saying I like Musk or agree with where his funding has come from... but unlike his BS car programs the space program is really knocking it out of the park.)
Second of all, how can anyone be so sick of mind that they somehow equate exploration and colonization of new places with a failed political ideology that collapsed the Soviet Union? If I understand the twisted non-logic correctly he’s implying that humans expanding their sphere of influence is negative like an insect swarm that destroys everything in its path and that man will decide to stop doing this and rebel against the idea.
If you truly believe this, then you believe that mankind’s best future course of action is to stagnate until it dies out.
That’s hideous.
And unfortunately if you worship the creation rather than the Creator who commanded us to have dominion over our world... you think stupid things like this.
