A terminally ill Alabama man called cops to confess to a homicide that stumped investigators for 25 years, police said.
Johnny Dwight Whited, 53, told a Decatur police detective Wednesday that he was responsible for the 1995 slaying of Christopher Alvin Dailey, who died from a single gunshot wound to the head, department officials said.
“Despite the extensive investigation, a suspect was never developed in the case,” police said in a statement Thursday. “In the years that followed, the case was revisited several times for leads.”

No motive?
Ping to the state list.
I’m still waiting for a definite conviction of a woman in North Alabama that occurred around 1982 or ‘83. She was last seen in a forest area and perhaps went into a cave. I’ve always suspected the husband did it, but afaik, no one was ever charged, and obviously, not convicted.
He looks old for 53.
Terminal illness will do that. There is a guy here in the RV park who is 45 and has terminal liver cancer. He has maybe 2 months. He looks every bit of 70..
He probably wants free medical care. Taxpayers will make him cancer free and he’ll be watching cable tv w/ meals and maid service for the next 20 years.
“He looks old for 53”
I have always noticed murderers who got away for it for years always look old. The pressure and guilt has to weigh on them.
Good friend of mine from high school just died of colo-rectal cancer. He was only 54, looked like a rough 70 in that final month.
RIP John, you were one of the good guys.
Did you not read the title? He’s terminally ill!
This story was the talk of the office yesterday, according to my daughter, who works in Clerk of Courts office in Decatur. The $15,000 bond was also pretty remarkable.
Reportedly, the judge was practically begging the guy to get himself a lawyer since it was a capital crime. He kept refusing, saying ‘I did it... I’m guilty.’
This was on the local news this morning, he would not disclose the motive. The two did not know each other, probably a drug deal that went bad.
I did. Read post 7 and 8. There are different opinions. They were much nicer.
My point was true. Looked very old for 53. Not sure whether due to guilt or sickness.
Wanted the other guy dead.
I’ve heard that a major cause of stress is NOT choking the living chit out of someone that desperately deserves it. I’m wondering if that event 25 years ago was a stress reliever for this guy. And he just needed help the cops close the case now that they really can’t touch him.
It was a bullet to the head and he didn’t know the guy. So choking the life out him for being an idiot doesn’t sound like the motive.
Somebody said “drug deal that went wrong.” I figure that is the highest probability.
Another possibility is a homosexual assignation that went wrong.
I’m just curious what would cause one guy to murder another like that.
free medical care in prison ... just saying.
Rage.
Wait... Conviction of the woman, or the one who killed the woman?
The one who killed the woman. She’s dead. Kinda hard to convict her of anything.
Sometimes you just piss off the wrong guy.
