You're a Zappa freak like me but I'll repeat this anyway...Frank allegedly said the only person he wanted to play Watermelon after he died was Dweezil.

Warren playing it within 48 hours of Frank's death with Duran Duran - I don't think he got the memo and doubt strongly it was out of disrespect.

Earth goes decades and years with ZPZ gigging without hearing that song...until Halloween 2013 at the Beacon in NYC where a very tearful Dweezil and a tight backing band returned that beautiful song to the planet in live form. I know people who caught this show (I had tickets but was away on business) and said it was incredibly moving.

I know Frank considers this the best tune of Joe's Garage and one of his signature songs (the others being Black Knapkins and Zoom Allures) and I mean no disrespect...but for me the best Zappa solo is Rat Tomago, which was taken from the Berlin 1978 performance of The Torture Never Stops.

But, as The Central Scrutinizer would say, who really gives a...

When the world ends Watermelon will be playing somewhere.

This is as it should be.

Zoot is amazing, as is Rat. But Watermelon hits me in places no other piece of music ever has.
