Ok your point is more clear; I was thinking of a “if-then-else” scenario...
If
the news of the phone call doesn’t come out,
then
Trump is cornered,
else
Trump is not cornered.
I.e. the else statement applies if the news of the phone call —does— come out.
Being “past the danger point” is simpler and clearer.
