I had the opportunity to interview author J.P. Redding (a pseudonym) shortly after his first book “Off Grid” came out. Initially, I thought it was a survivalist book. The subtitle “Is there anywhere to hide from the surveillance state?” suggested that. It turns out that it is a science fiction book, as well.

Only after watching the first half do you find out that his wife is close to giving birth and he has to be there for prenatal care visits and the birth.
So surprise, surprise: he fails.
Not much of a challenge.
Cracked.com interviewed an American who was “living off the grid”. I don’t remember the exact reason why barring some criminal charges and debts. Point was, he followed the illegal alien example. And he decided to pass FOR an illegal alien. (Dark hair, dark eyes, could pass as such.)
Thus he went to Mexico for a while, struggled with the language but learned some, then came back. Used their network of stolen identities, worked jobs that pay cash, rented somewhere that accepted cash. He then had the ability to move around the United States, though he avoided former friends and family.
