That was a bad bad bad bad comment.
He didnt miss by mistake
The spot where he was riding; no. He was probably going a little to fast and we’ve had rain recently
I heard that Highway 1 is scary to drive, that it looks like you could go off a cliff.

Wuss. Used to drive it every weekend in the late 60s - fun drive - a stop at Nepentha for drinks, walk on the beach
No, they were not joking. I earned my first license out on HiWay 1.
Funny thing is, no one in my family thought a thing about driving HiWay 1. I never have either. But what I have learned is this:
Many people have astigmatism, abnormal curvatures of eyeballs, and all sorts of strange ways of seeing things...and none of that is intentional but they may not see a curve the same way as we did or do...
In the end, it is a difficult high way to drive if you drive too damned fast. The guard rails don’t do it justice.
And people who are impatient of slower drivers or just impatient in general should NOT drive it.
I have always loved the views!!
Was he on his Go Pro !
A lot of them
I thought I heard he was saying, Im comin, mama.
If youre going to die, you couldnt pick a more beautiful spot.
My scariest ride was in Utah, driving up the mountain road to the ski resorts. Real narrow road with cliff face on one side and nothing on the other except a long way down.......
I was driving at night and was scared out of my mind and I was in a car. I cant imaginr being on a motorcycle on that road at any time of the day.
He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
He had a hopped-up ‘cycle that took off like a gun
That fool was the terror of Highway 101
(Wrong highway, I know.)
We were driving Highway 1, north of San Francisco. North of Jenner, it becomes very steep with only a metal barrier to stop you from going over the side, if you make even one mistake. Going up to the beautiful hotel, the Timber Cove Inn, to celebrate my birthday, I could hardly open my eyes I was so frightened. Driving back down the road was even worse the next day. The whole area was covered in fog and I was just terrified. Weve never gone back there.....and that is fine with me. Beautiful area, but impossible to deal with, for someone who is afraid of heights.
Yep, there are a few scary stretches.
There are a lot of places on that road where there is a high penalty for failure.
You ought to drive some of the mountain roads in Taiwan. They make anything here look tame. Narrow, no guard rails and steep. Two days after we were on one a section of the road collapsed and whole busload of people dropped down into a 200 ft plus canyon.
My wife and I have the done the US1 LA to SF twice in the last few years. I have a convertible GT Mustang and it is as beautiful drive as any I’ve done. Agree on the danger part.
Look where you want to go.
Don’t drink and ride.
Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.
Of course, he could have just been racing.
It is not at all scary. The entire stretch north and south of Devil’s slide is easy riding. There are very few switchbacks. A few but not many and not that slow. This is in the south bay. Route 1 in the north bay has a lot more hairy, tight switchbacks.
Rider was either impaired, racing, or was new to riding. Or could have had a heart attack while riding. Or had target fixation where he looked where he did not want to go, rather than looking where he wanted to go. Any number of reasons. But a scary highway is not one of those reasors. Hwy 1 is a great, easy riding road from Pacifica right down to Santa Cruz and parts further south. Relaxing and pleasant. Not hard work at all, and nothing scary.
This was at Devil’s slide, barely 10 miles south of San Francisco. There are plenty of places you can go off the road if you are driving like a maniac. As the picture showed, it is not a sheer cliff at all but a steep hillside. Excess speed, impairment, or lack of skill were the likely causes. I mean, I suppose James Bond could have shot him mid-curve with a high-powered sniper rifle assembled from parts he toted in an attache case, but not very likely.
