The problem with using the fuel rods from the local plant is it’s still on line, and has quite a trigger-happy staff. Like there have been a few instances where vehicles were accidentally shot. Their personal vehicles, not the public’s.
Seriously, there are plenty of armed guards there, and they have auto weapons locked away. Pill boxes on the roof. I toured the plant a few years ago - it’s pretty tight.
I used to sample groundwater wells at Palisades...right next to the dry casks holding the rods....right next to Lake Michigan.
