The company behind the ads on Newport Road, Cardiff, said they intend to use 'humour and satire to challenge bigotry'
A controversial advertising hoarding featuring Kim Jong-un has been replaced with another billboard depicting Donald Trump with a reference to "Mexicans".
An advert for the Soulful Food Company showing an image of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un in front of a mushroom cloud with the words "Ahhh, Soul!" appeared in Cardiff's Newport Road earlier this week.
The company later apologised and said it would be removing the advert following complaints from some who suggested the billboard's message was racist.
The advertisement which has replaced the original now features an image of incumbent US President Donald Trump holding a plate of food and a fork beside the words, in quotation marks: "Mexicans. I love 'em."
In 2015 Trump sought to play down accusations of racism at an campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona, where he told the crowd: "I love the Mexican people. I love the spirit of the Mexican people. I love 'em."
In a statement released on Friday the Soulful Food Company claimed the new advert's message was satirical and intended to "highlight the need for more soul".
"We've replaced the ad with a new creative," a spokesman said. "Our campaign is all about using humour and satire to challenge bigotry and highlight the need for more soul.
"Soulful as a brand is about tolerance: our food is inspired by countries from all over the world and we work with both FareShare and Refugee Community Kitchen to support people who have been displaced or disenfranchised."
Aliya Mohammed, of Race Equality First based in Cardiff, said she felt the company were "playing on racism" to forward their brand but said she did not consider the Donald Trump advert to be racist.
"Soulful Foods have stated that their message is 'satirical' and that their intention was to use 'humour and satire to challenge bigotry'," she said.
"However the issue of racism cannot be used as a joke because it is a sad reality which has a damaging and destructive impact on the lives of many people, which we see on a daily basis in our line of work at Race Equality First.
"Racist memes and jokes lead to name-calling which lead to open hostility towards black and ethnic minority people."
Following complaints about the original advertisement the Soulful Food Company said they were "really sorry we've caused offence" and admitted "we have made a misjudgement with this advert".
They also repeated their claim that the intention behind the advert was to "highlight the world needs more soul right now".
What do these adds even mean, and why would they help sell food? Maybe they think articles on the ads will cause more people to buy their product. I am skeptical.
Even bad exposure is good publicity.
Besides, why is it racist, when China alone, has a dozen different ethnicities?
Some, I assume, are good people.
The Kim jungun ad would have won an addy if it said ahhh, seoul. As in the capitol of s Korea.
