Exotic pet lizard stranded for 3 days on Daly City power line is rescued

It sure didn’t look like he wanted to be rescued.

The chameleon was spotted clinging to a power line by a neighbor looking through a window of her Daly City home. For three days, he didn’t move from his perch. Maybe he was enjoying soaking up the unusual early November sun.

Besides, bad things happen at street level — cars trying to squash you under their wheels, coyotes looking for a quick snack, feral cats, even raccoons. Better to stay above it all, safe and sound.

Where he came from is a mystery. Daly City is not known for its tropical reptile species.

“Clearly, someone’s exotic pet had escaped,” said Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox. “Or it had gotten loose from a pet store.”

Chameleons, which are omnivores, need to eat once every two days. Unless a hapless fly or two had flown within range of its spring-loaded tongue, the lizard had to be hungry.

So on Wednesday, the neighbor called the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for help. PHS/SPCA checked with an AT&T pole worker in the area to make sure attempting a rescue would be safe, according to Tarbox.

Who paid for the “rescue?” Who paid to murder the unborn human? Take a guess.

I went to PetSmart tonight, to get my kitten fix (they have cages of rescue kittens to adopt) and to obtain some lizard snax for my small Southwestern lizards. My leopard gecko (my only “foreign” lizard, although she is captive bred) really appreciated the 7 large crickets she snarfed down. Glad they rescued the chameleon on the cable. They are pretty expensive, too.
